There is definitely an issue with education on fixed DD and I lay the blame entirely on Ofgem's door, not only have they allowed it to thrive, they have made it mandatory for it to be offered?  With most suppliers making it default method of payment on credit meters.  Almost everyone I know treats and thinks fixed DD as a pretty an all you can eat service.

It has also become normalised behaviour to consider energy debt as a interest free loan that will never be collected.

A systematic problem they refusing to tackle, as it would be politically unpopular.

They could use the old Symbio billing method of an estimate for the month going forward which was then corrected to actual at the next bill.  Hellish confusing for the non energy bill savvy though.  I would not be averse to SC in advance and consumption in arrears method. The problem is that neither the suppliers nor OFGEM can organise the proverbial in a brewery.

Thank you, sorry I wasn't clear they are getting data just fine and I'm being billed properly, they just haven't taken an index reading since April according to the meter reading history.
Octopus don't appear to record index readings for customers on HH billed tariffs.
We've been on Go / Intelligent Go for quite a while now and the most recent index reading on our account is from September 2023!

Octopus have recently started requesting meter readings and it was only then that I found they had stopped automatically recording one every 22nd of the month (statement date) back in April. I'm on cosy for import.

The fixed 15p export still gets an automatic monthly index reading.

I would have thought they would need index readings to fill in for any missing hh data, as per their smart t&cs for iirc 4 days per month (yes lower in 1.5)  re part missing hh data.

    https://octopus.energy/policies/smart-tariffs-terms-and-condition/

    From 1.5
"... If we are unable to obtain the full set of half hourly meter readings for a billing period, we may estimate your consumption by using your reading at midnight to estimate missing half hourly readings ...."

I assume that the readings at midnight reference are the daily total index readings.

They are still collecting those readings even if they do not populate the customer facing database with them.

Then why do they ask me to submit it manually each month?

That is a very good question, as if you are on Cosy they don't need it for that, are they just asking for the export reading or import as well?

It certainly isn't normal to request this for the half-hour tariffs, or are they billing you as a multi-rate tariff more like E7?

Are you actually accumulating use in two registers? ... if so then I've seen them do this with Octopus Go as well (not Intelligent Octopus Go but the original Go.)

A SMETS2 meter which has happily coped with Agile and Flux in the past. Went onto Cosy in January when the ASHP was fitted and it was fine. The messages from Octopus started in late April - we haven't had a meter reading from you for a while. In order for us to send accurate bills....etc.

I ignored it at first, assuming it was something to do with the gas meter that had been removed in January. Bills came through as normal.  Eventually noticed the monthly index readings were missing for import on the app so submitted one on 1st July. Didn't cause a bill to be generated and they haven't asked again for a reading but there's no reading again for 22nd July when the last bill was issued.

Export reading are all there for the 22nd of each month.
