When I renewed my o/70 licence I realised that the start date of the new licence was the date I made the application and not the date the old licence expired (a month later). This is apparently correct, but is a bit of a con if, like me, you have a medical each time, so in future I won't be renewing long before the old licence expires but will wait until the last moment.
my renewal date is the date before my birthday   10/01 - 4b on the licence.

but the application date at 4a is 28/10

Same as mine, the licence is valid from the application date until the day before my birthday so 3yrs 1 month validity period. In the above case it would be 1 yr 1 month, it doesn't really matter if you have the medical one month or one week before the renewal as the expiry date will always be the day before your birthday.

Well, not always. My last renewal was due on my birthday in April 2023, but there was a medical query which the DVLA took 3 months to sort out. The new licence was issued in July, with a July 2026 expiry date.
