hello

im thinking of opening a current account with Nationwide for the first time

I am checking if when you apply to join them they check your identity etc electronically?

I don’t want to be messing about sending documents in the post or going to a branch

All the banks I have joined down the years have always let me open accounts and have never once asked me to send documents to them etc

with Nationwide being a building society I would like to know if they too will attempt to verify me electronically at first

id rather know now and just not bother rather than deal with any hassle

what’s other peoples experience in this issue?

 Thanks

The only way you are going to find out is to try it. If you are on the electoral register and have a credit record the chances are that the electronic check will suffice. You can always walk away from the process if they want paper copies or a branch visit.

I recently opened a flex account and it was all done online. Having said that, the system threw up a message that I had been a previous member so a lot of the questions were pre-populated - a small surprise to me. The only two banks that have been - shall we say, pendantic - were RBS & Ulster with their ID searches.

I opened my account with nationwide and everything was really easy and straightforward,  no need to send ID or anything

The odd thing is, about a week later I received in the post a card reader!?!

One or those little calculator style things from about 2005!

Do people still find they have to use it?

    And for what?

Mainly for adding new payees, but can also be used as a logon authenticator.

Even if you only use the app you are likely to need it at some point, so don't throw it away.

Nationwide say they are working on alternatives so the card reader isn't essential any more, but wait until you are sure that has happened before getting rid of yours.

    Thanks

do you find that once you’ve added a new payee, subsequent transfers to that payee via the app  don’t require use of the card reader?

Yes - I've never needed to use the card reader one a payee has been set up
