Incidentally, hip phone holders were laughed at by the youth as old persons accessories. The last time I had one, I owned a Motorola Razr. Life e was less complicated than now. Good luck.Since my lost phone incident, I have been looking at what others do regarding smartphones and notice that many younger people just have them in their hands all the time, either looking at them or pointing them in the direction of something they want to video or photograph. Also, the staff in the cafe where I left my phone, seemed to take the whole episode very casually as if it was an everyday occurrence when I came to collect it. Maybe people just accept they will lose their phone every now and then and put up with it rather than be uncool with using cases, lanyards, holsters etc.0

I think the lanyard idea is probably the best one for me. My phone is presently in a fairly standard fake leather case with a flip over cover, so the lanyard can be fixed through the opening in the case for the charger socket. This seems very secure and does not depend on glue. The lanyard will not be used to hang my phone from, but only as a means to make sure the phone does not fall out of my trouser pocket, so I do not have to worry about the flip over cover flopping about as I walk.1

I have my mobile in my pocket for about 95% of the time when I am out and about, hence why I think I need to do something to keep it from falling out or even getting stolen.

My answer is to insist on a phone which is small enough to comfortably fit into my pocket, and to have pockets in all my clothes which are sufficiently deep to contain it. And yes, I check when I'm buying anything new that the pockets will 'work'.
However, one difficulty is that most Android manufacturers believe that bigger is better, so every time I have to replace it, I have a greater struggle to find one which meets my specification. Staff in mobile phone shops agree that I'm not the only one who wants this, but there's apparently not enough demand (as I stand before them, demanding!)
And my choice of clothing is similarly limited by the mistaken belief that women don't want / need pockets on skirts or trousers, because it 'spoils the line'. So does the drawstring you insist on putting in elasticated trousers and skirts. Let me deal with 'the line', just give me pockets!
However, because my phone is ALWAYS in my pocket, I very soon notice if it's not, and miss it, and feel naked without it. It's very rare for me to leave it behind, and when I do it's usually at home ...
Lanyards - has phone design changed so that there's no longer a little hole you can thread a thin loop from a lanyard through? I think cases used to have a little hole too, for the same reason.Signature removed for peace of mind2 -

Will require deep pockets, in the idiomatic sense rather than literally, they are not cheap - but the form is a refreshing change from the usual slabs.2
