They are comfortable compact and discrete and could even be worn under a t-shirt if preferred.
Go for a simple design such as the basic flipbelt or I have the Parkrun belt ( https://shop.parkrun.com/collections/apricot-accessories/products/parkrun-multi-pocket-waist-belt# )
Various types are available, typically from around £20.
I use belt pouches and again they wouldn't protect me if I left the phone on a table etc. Some of the belt pouches are more secure then others. I buy the ones which have two separate belt loops and a sprung belt loop in the middle and AVOID those which have a sprung loop and a flip over press stud, those are NOT as secure as the others.
The lanyards look like a good idea but a quick view shows that they are only secured, unless I'm wrong, to the phone with a piece of sticky tape.
I'd have thought that a USB type C secure clip, which had to be pressed to insert and detach, attached to a strong lanyard would be a good idea ........ perhaps they already exist.
If the above exists it would certainly be very secure especially if used with the Parkrun belt recommended by Grumpy_Chap.

Good Luck
I bought mine, mainly to use at (beer) festivals so that I can have my hands free and not worry about my phone dropping out of my pocket, but I also used it extensively last week on holiday, including when taking photos, browsing the internet/maps on my phone and when paying. I wear mine crossbody style.
Although as a woman I usually have a bag, it's not always super convenient to keep putting your phone in and out - especially if you use a backpack style - I've been converted to the brilliance of a crossbody lanyard2 -

The adhesive pad only needs to be strong enough to tolerate friendly usage. If someone snatches the phone with force, they are going to have it regardless.
The running belts I referenced often have a clip for key ring which would easily serve to loop the other end of the lanyard through.
I am actually glad this thread came along as I often use my phone for photos in hard to reach places and always fearful that I will drop the phone and lose it (together with car key and credit cards). A lanyard affixed by adhesive pad would be suitable to prevent that type of outcome.1 -

I have lots of these pouches in several sizes which I use for various things and can attest to their robustness. As they're nylon, they're also washable.
Textured Nylon Zip Pouch ‐ Medium | MUJI https://share.google/q5833WCNvDLvGwQVT
I've just tried it, and my phone (Pixel 8) fits snugly (lengthwise) into the medium size. Thanks for this, but it is just too big and the zip is in on the long side. The website that this was advertised on, has a picture showing several of their items and there is a long pouch with the zip or clasp at the short end, but I could not locate it anywhere:Any ideas where I could find this?0 -

Incidentally, hip phone holders were laughed at by the youth as old persons accessories. The last time I had one, I owned a Motorola Razr. Life e was less complicated than now. Good luck.Since my lost phone incident, I have been looking at what others do regarding smartphones and notice that many younger people just have them in their hands all the time, either looking at them or pointing them in the direction of something they want to video or photograph. Also, the staff in the cafe where I left my phone, seemed to take the whole episode very casually as if it was an everyday occurrence when I came to collect it. Maybe people just accept they will lose their phone every now and then and put up with it rather than be uncool with using cases, lanyards, holsters etc.0

Muji also have this, but you'd need to unclip the shoulder strap, and just use the pouch.

But TBH what you need is a lanyard, I use mine with my phone in my pocket, the lanyard just ensures it is secured to my person, and if it falls out of my pocket, won't be lost. I saw several men using them in Spain last week.
Lots of options on Amazon, and the straps adjust to the length you want.0 -
