I have a Drayton Wiser controller for my heating system.  This has wireless thermostats and a receiver which is connected to my "boiler" by a (long) wire.  Surely that's all you need?  What does this Hive Hub that people are obsessing about actually do?  Clearly there is an option to avoid using it

and I can't understand why you would want one.

You need the hub if you want to be able to control it from your phone etc.

That's not very good.  Network connectivity is built-in to the receiver on my Drayton Wiser system.  So it connects wirelessly to me router and I can control it from my phone.  No "Hub" required.

I think it is so that you can control the heating from your phone when out of the home, and if it's like the Nest system I had previously, it will automatically switch off the heating if there is nobody in the house for more than a certain amount of time (not sure if Hive does this but Nest does it).

I guess the complications are because they want you to add all sorts of other devices and gizmos to the same hub so you can control your whole house from one app (in theory).

Is it a new build house, or new to you?
If the latter it might be worthwhile contacting the previous owners. They could have taken the hub with them assuming it was part of their internet/router installation.

Lots of people take the hub with them as until recently Hive wouldn't transfer them to new owners instead making them buy a new one.

That's the same thermostat I have. I think the "mini" differs in that there's no control knob.

I have spoken to my Daughter, who has Hive Heating. Their hub packed up some time ago and, rather than buy a replacement, they control and programme the heating using the thermostat only.
Possibly there never was a hub, it failed or it was taken away by the previous occupants?
It would seem, going from my Daughter's experience, the hub isn't necessary. The hub only connects to Hive via t'internet and to their app..
I suspect you need to visit Hive's website where there's hopefully instructions to programme and control the heating and hot water using the thermostat.

In their FAQs it does confirm that heating and hot water programming may be set up using the thermostat without the hub.

Yes I have already figured out that I can just use the thermostat directly on the wall.

I would like to have the hub though - in our previous house we had a Next thermostat and we got quite used to being able to control the heating with our phone - useful if you have been away for a holiday and you want to warm the house up a few hours before you get back.

Nest also automatically switches the heating off if it sees you are not home for a few hours, but I haven't seen any documentation that says that Hive can do that.  It also learns your patterns of behaviour and can adjust the schedule dynamically over time  based on what you do to the thermostat and when you are in/out.

I believe, but not certain (source my neighbour) that hive can do similar but you may need to sign up for £3.99/mnth for hive plus. I can’t verify since they are away for 2 weeks. However hive has form for making some kit unusable when they change the way things do.
