Hi all,
Just reading this thread with interest. Daughter is 19 months old and have only just got round to thinking about washable nappies. I wasn't confident when she was born, but want to try her now and then i feel i can do it with the next one. (whenever that will be)
I found a brilliant site https://www.babykind.co.uk where you can have a trial kit for two weeks, i emailed an 'advisor' and she gave me loads of advice and i am now awaiting my trial kit of four nappies to give it a go. They send you all the accessories and then after 2 weeks you send it back and get my deposit back less the cost of hiring the nappies. Will work out at about £12.50 for two weeks. At least i can try different makes so i can see how i get on, and if it doesn't work i haven't spent too much trying.
Have tried our council for free samples but we don't seem to have much around here.
Also found the nappylady website very helpful.0 -
Please please dont waste your money on Bambino Mio. I had them for my first and bought the pack when I was pregnant and it was awful. The covered leaked and the poo leaked on to the cover with each nappy which meant washing the cover with each nappy change. Please dont do it!
I am just putting my second (8 weeks and v cute) through terry squares with mother ease or popino wraps. Don't be put off by the folding it is really easy I do a fold which is basically folding it in to thirds and then fanning the top bit out. and then hold in place with a nappy nipper.
I have some shaped ones for when the mother in law is in charge which are great and tots bots have just started to do one in microfibre which means they they dry really quick - quicker than terries.
I love my terries as they are multipurpose (and also are the cheapest option) They dry quickly and you can through them over your shoulder (recomended when clean) as an urp cloth. Put them on the floor / grass for the baby to kick about naked on and can be folded in a no of different ways to suit the shape of your baby (coz they are all shaped differently!)
Try your council for info as ours give 30 quid off and also can recommend a hiring scheme where you can try for a few weeks before you buy. Really recommend. Baba 2 has not been in a disposable since she was 1.5 weeks and she hasn't leaked yet and has not got nappy rash yet.
Got my buckets from John Lewis - really good and big enough although recommend getting 2
There is nothing worse than a smelly bin of disposables, I'm not sure why but washables don't smell nearly as offensive.
good luck to you0 -
I loved my son's Kushies ultras. They never leaked, washed really well and are in the attic for a second use hopefully.
BUT he grew out of the toddler size at about 17 or so months old. He IS very big for his age, but it's worth checking with a lollipop advisor or someone who uses them before buying. (He grew out of the terries shortly after so it wasn't entirely a Kushies problem.)May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
I have already posted this as a seperate thread before I saw this one.
I was shopping in Barnsley ( south yorks ) yesterday and discovered a lady in the Alhambra Shopping Mall selling reusable nappies and acsessories, environmentally friendly disposables. She also offers a Real Nappy Service, where you get a weeks supply of reusables delivered with a storage bin then at the end of the week someone comes and collects the used ones and delivers another weeks supply of clean ones. I used a similar sevice when my older chidren ( 15 & 14 now ) were babies, but couldn't find anything for dd2. who is now just out of nappies.

I honestly don't know why people pay for nappy cleaning services. It takes not a lot of effort to stick them in the washing machine, and hang them on an airer to dry.0

hiya - and congratulations!
we used Bambino Mio's up until DD was about 18 months old, and now we use the Nature Boy and Girl biodegradeable nappies. The Bambino Mio's were great, and weren't hard to clean etc. We'll definitely use them again if we're lucky enough to have a second.

We used terry squares on our twins. They really are not that difficult to fold once you get the hang of it. In fact I found them easier to use than the prefolds we tried. We had the very occasional leak, but then probably everyone does, whatever they use. If at all possible find an outlet you can visit to try things out before baby is born. It's much easier to make a decision once you have played around with various types of prefold/terry square/wrap.
Certainly terry squares work out cheaper, though quality does vary. We bought loads from Boots because they were cheap. And while they were OK, they didn't last as well (and didn't hold as much fluid) as the terry squares we bought from Green Baby. Also our twins were under 5lb when born so we had to buy small squares (from Green Baby) to start them off. Still use these for other household tasks! The small ones make great flannels and the larger (full size) ones are used as bath mats (or whatever you call the thing you put on the floor outside the bathtub), wiping up spills, washing floors, etc.
We didn't really consider nappy services for several reasons:
1. cost
2. lack of choice of nappy
3. really didn't want to have a bin full of dirty nappies hanging around for a week, especially with twins.
Having said that we killed our washing machine with all the extra work (it was on every day, once for nappies and then again if we needed to wash anything else).0 -
Hiya did you have any bad experiences of Bambino Mio? I have herad mixed reveiws - some very good some very bad. Think this is what we will go for in the end anyway, just curious :-)Kirsty, Taunton, xxx0

In true 'old style' fashion, I am using washable nappies on my one month old baby. I am generally very pleased with them, but have just one wee problem.
Now, if you are at all sensitive about nappy contents, please do not read any further! My problem is that baby poos a lot - nearly every nappy change is dirty as well as wet. (Have checked with midwife and health visitor and there is nothing wrong with baby, this is just the way she is). This is hard (and unpleasant!) to describe but what happens is that the poo works its way to the edge of the liner and then into the seams/folds round the leg area of the outer wrap. Thankfully the wraps hold it in and it has never leaked over her clothes.
Bascially I have two questions. 1) do you think I am doing something wrong with the liner? Or is this just what happens?
2) the outer wraps have become stained round the seams and where the elastic bits are on the legs. Does anyone have any idea how I can get the stains out without damaging the wraps?
thank you0 -
I found similar with Spuds nappies for a while. I don't think there is anything much you can do to prevent it. I just used to hold the nappy in the loo while I flushed it & try to angle it to wash off the worst of the poo, then wash in Nappisan which seems to shift the worst of the stains (and the rest get bleached in sunlight;)).
The good news is that the pooing-round-the-clock phase does end at around 2-3 months & they tend to then poo only once or twice a day at fairly regualr times.......at least until they are on soilds when they poo all the time again but at least it isn't so squishy:p:rolleyes::DPost Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!0
