Thanks guys! I am now even more confused as to what to get though, as everyone has such different experiences hehe. I was going to go with Bambino Mio prefolds, but I have heard a lot of people say (here and elsewhere) that the covers leak - has anyone used them recently and have any experience of this?
Thanks again!Kirsty, Taunton, xxx0 -
Here's my tuppence worth
Buy the 1st size 2nd hand or cheap as they grow so quickly. Get a variety of makes to find your fave - at 2nd hand prices its easier to do. they spend the longest in the 2nd size so here's where you need to make any "investment" if on a tight budget. (6 months tops in 1st size and I had a weeny baby - 18 months + in the larger sizes). A great place to look is the buy and sell forum on http://www.ukparents.co.uk
I advise 5 wraps so you always have 2 in the wash, 2 to wear and 1 as a spare. i've always asked for wraps as gifts as this meant people gave me something I'd actually use for the price of yet another fluffy toy lol! I'm lucky in that family and friends are the type to prefer getting ds practical gifts that they know will get used.
If you intend to BF go for a 2 part fitted style at least until you wean as these are the most reliable with runny explosive poo. Pocket and prefold nappies work much better once they are weaning. (This is not so important for forumla babies as their poo is more solid from day 1). If you are going to formula feed then prefolds would be your cheapest option if you don't like terry sqaures.
Pocket nappies and all in one nappies are also very very dependent on the shape of your baby for their effectiveness - so if you get a great fit on your 1st kid a later younger sibling may not suit them at all.
I personally opted for applix nappies and wraps to start with, followed by poppered wraps once ds got to a year (and started taking his nappies off!). This is cos I used childcare and granny from 6 weeks so had to choose something very easy for everyone to change. My Mum has arthritic hands so could manage too many poppers. Nurseries and childminders also prefer applix fastening as its very quick and easy and similar to changing a sposie.
Nippa'd size 2 tots can be folded down if you won't be using childcare early on to fit from birth to potty so long as bubs isn't one of those babies that doesn't train till 3.
cheap new choices:-
cwlt twt on ebay has had great reviews from users
cpa handicrafts on wahmall.co.uk does some wonderful bundles that would be lovely to ask for as a gift as they are personalised and individual designs esp her wraps.
littlelambs do 20 nappies + 5 wraps + a bucket and liners (all you need) for £99 - I have some of these in size 2 and they are very similar to the much more expensive tots bots for 1/2 the price
the tots bots website does 2nds - again I have some of these - great I can't tell the differnce between their top price stuff aprt from a timy bit of wonky stiching
https://www.twinkleonthe web has a sale on
don't buy nb wraps new as they outgrow them in weeks - get 2nd hand or hire them from thenappylady.co.uk
My best advice is to get people to give you a variety of nappy brands to try out at first instead of daft fluffy toys and daft outfits (babies spend their first few nmonths in vest s and baby grows yet always get given all these posh elaborate "outfits") and then buy more of your faves. DS is given the next size up wraps for birthdays and Xmas and its really helped. Supplement the gifts with some cheapy 2nd hand nappies and spend your money on the size 2 nappys when you'll have a clear idea of which you like best.
I loved tots wraps before his cord healed (a combi of gifts and hand me downs from an american aunty) - nb wraps are outgrown so quickly they get hardly any wear at all) and then switched to motherease ever since just because they are so reliable.
If you want to make some nappies let me know and I'll dig out a link to free patterns for you. I'm currently making him some training pants.
If you intend to line dry:-
Motherease popolini and one life all do a fitted poppered birth to potty. The downside to these is that they not absorbent enough for nights, the motherease and the popolinis are usually outgrown before potty training and for heavy wetters they are out wee'd. Fine if you have a light wetter but you won't know that till bubs arrives. If you like this option get a couple 2nd hand to check for the power wee factor. I have a couple of these as they are a nice slim fit for Ds's smart church trousers.
nature babies do a fold out shaped nappy. I (personally found it easier to fold a terry sqaure and sold my trial one of these on.) you can get these from twinkleontheweb
tots bots do a microfibre nappy - the fluffle - get some as seconds.0 -
Hi Kirsty, the problem with the Bambino Mio wraps was that they were cotton on the outside, so they tended to leak. I found the binding also tended to get damp. If they do polyester wraps then they would be perfect. I've not done any nappy shopping for ages. My son is nearly out of nappies, so I'm not really update date with the latest in nappy fashion!
There is nothing wrong with using the Bambino Mio prefolds with different wraps. I used Cotton Bottoms wraps. They are pretty good. I didn't have many problems with leaks. I've also seen Junior Joy wraps on Ebay (very cheap) and also Hester wraps (i think???) They would do the job. I always have loads of wraps. More like 10! I found it a real struggle with the 3 or 4 that they suggest.0 -
Hi Somerset Princess - I remember you! Can't offer anything on the real nappies front, all mine had disposable ones. Just posting to say congratulations :j and good luck!

Before I settled on all-in-ones for Spud I used Juniior Joy & Motherease wraps with pre-folds & found the JJ ones to be far & away the best, they have a double leg cuff which is, IMHO, a must for early poo catching!! JJ are very cheap on ebay.

My favourite subject. :rotfl:
After extensive research and trials just added it up and we own about 60 nappies   it can be addictive. I love my bumbles which are fully fleece lined and are lovely and soft on babes bum. We have used these since birth although they are bullky on newborns. MIL looks after DD while I'm at work and we have a set of Onelife which are simular to Motherease onesize at her house which she thinks are great because she cant get to grips with nappy nippas. We use motherease airflow during the day now but when dd was small we used motherase rikki wraps as the containment for explosive breastfed poo is much bettear. At night we use wool or fleece wraps as they let dd's bum breath better. As others have said the nappylady site is great as is this http://www.kittykins.co.uk. Also the nappy board on the babycenter site is great for advice. PM me if theres any questions I can answer for you. And congratulations on the little one

Not sure if this is the right forum but I think Ive seen other postings here re. nappies.
I was shopping in Barnsley ( south yorks ) yesterday and discovered a lady in the Alhambra Shopping Mall selling reusable nappies and acsessories, environmentally friendly disposables. She also offers a Real Nappy Service, where you get a weeks supply of reusables delivered with a storage bin then at the end of the week someone comes and collects the used ones and delivers another weeks supply of clean ones. I used a similar sevice when my older chidren ( 15 & 14 now ) were babies, but couldn't find anything for dd2. who is now just out of nappies.

Hi Kirsty,
Congratulations!
I read your and ancasta's threads about wanting a baby with interest last year, so it's lovely to hear you're now expecting!
I got married on easter sunday this year, and DH and I are planning to start trying for a baby in July (holding out for the 9 mths paid maternity leave!)
Good lucjk with it all, keep us posted! If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right - Henry Ford0 -
Awww thank you for the sweet post! Yes we got pregnant rather quicker than we expected so were thrilled hehe! 6 weeks left at work now!
I hope you manage to fall really quickly too once you start trying!Kirsty, Taunton, xxx0 -
Hi again Kirsty
I just wanted to add, get the BIGGEST lidded bucket you can to keep the dirty nappies in. I have a Boots nappy bucket and it is tiny, I am now using 2nd size washables & it holds about 3 before the lid pops off:mad: I am on the lookout for a proper household size bucket with a lid but I can't find one anywhere. Proper "nappy" buckets are just too small:rolleyes:
