I dry-pailed and then washed in normal non-bio with a dose of napisan added (dose was about a tablespoon or 2 full). Line drying, ideally in sun, helped a lot too.

I used to dunk in the loo (if necessary), wring out, and then keep in a lidded bucket next to the loo, then wash on a hot wash as required. Lots of washing hands, of course. I never liked the thought of a heavy smelly bucket slopping everywhere. Apart from the washing powder, there were no chemicals on bottoms, or my hands, and virtually no nappy rash (not even me ...)

Disposable nappies were useless in those days, and the towelling nappies lasted for at least 2 babies (I have four, now grownup)

again, i just dry pailed. 60 wash and a day on the line gets rid of most stains.

I use cloth nappies and have never bothered to soak them with no problems. A 60 deg wash with non-bio and a tablespoon of Bio-D (which can be used as a sanitiser) does the job. Apparently if nappies do get stained the best thing to do is hang them in the sun to bleach them but it's never been an issue for us.

Some nappies are not suitable for use with napisan so do double check that if you use anything other than terry squares. Like a lot of the other posters we dry-pail nappies then I use milton to clean the bucket well, dry it and add a drop of lavender oil. Seems to minimise any smells.
Also I've found stripping the nappies with a vinegar wash/rinse every now and again can help if they are starting to get smelly despite 60deg washes etc. Again take care using vinegar with certain wraps etc.
  • Another vote for dry pailing here :-)
