Hello Swan, I am looking for a white bread recipe for making by hand please.

I have been and bought some Doves Organic flour. I have put in in the freezer for the night as my last bag had those tiny bugs in it!

There are lots of recipes on this thread but all seem to be for a BM. Would they work by hand as well or are the quatities of liquid to flour different?

    Many thanks
that recipe in the link in jordylass's post above looks good
and there's alot of good advice in it, particularly about the changing texture of the dough as you knead it & knowing when it's ready for proving

Dove's Farm flour is excellent, you should get good results with it, bugs (if any) & all ;)

please let us know how you get on :)
  • Does anyone make their bread by hand?

I have a kitchenaid mixer to help, but I still have not found a recipe that works well for me. I am brilliant at bowling balls!

I have tried a few in the past but none have given me great results.

If anyone has a good by hand recipe that always works, I would much appreciate it

Bootman the recipe I posted earlier in the post is to make bread by hand - I have used a breadmaker before but gave it to my DD as I prefer my hand made bread.

Woops just realised that jordylass has already given you the link for my recipe - thanks for that jordylass.

Maypole, I used Hovis Granary flour, bit espensive but very nice; I usually do half granary and half white :)

but if you look at the price of shop bread now, home made is beginning to look better and better value!

I Just wanted to say the bread recipe worked great!:T

I halved the quantities and made 1 bloomer, 2 rolls and rolled another piece out and marked into sticks. I then sprinkled Parmesan on the top.

I will definitely stick to this recipe.

    Many thanks again
  • Hi all.
I was the OP of this thread, and I feel awful now about the title "Can it EVER taste nice". I obviously did'nt have the right machine, cause now I have a Panasonic, even the quick 2hour loaf tastes fantastic.

I was shocked watching the Jamie Oliver programme the other night, that in three slices of bought processed bread there is over 2 tsps of SUGAR. There is only 1.1/2 in our whole loaves made at home. I am so glad I am baking my own now, if not for the cost (must only be about 30p per loaf) but for my famillies health.

The only thing I am having to get used to is bread crumbs everywhere, hehe. I am having to sweep the kitchen floor twice a day as hubby gets bread crum bs EVERYWHERE when he slices a loaf. Think I can live with that though :-))

Glad you have finally solved the problem Steph:D

I love my Panny too. I tried handmaking the bread and achieved some good results, but couldn't make several loaves at once because I only have a small freezer and no room for a larger one. So a *one at a time* breadmaker suits me fine.;) On which topic, could people please remember we haven't all got big freezers so the advice to *make lots, freeze the surplus* can't always apply:o

Has anyone ever made soda bread, you don't need yeast I believe, but I don't think it keeps well. Has to be made by hand though.

I have made it, with mixed results. When it works it is fantatastic, otherwise I have a large solid "plate" of bread

I sometimes stick oats in, but can't remember proportions, maybe that is why? :rotfl:

Why? You can use a food mixer as well with the same results.
