Anyone having trouble accessing the Nationwide website?

Following a recent legacy my wife and I opened a Nationwide saving account. All was well on the 10th June, but then we went on 10 days holiday, and now we are back I can't get onto any Nationwide website! But my wife can, from the same house.
I am worried Nationwide has done a "Coventry".
A couple of months ago I tried to check on an account we have with the Coventry and couldn't access their site, although my wife could. When I phoned their helpdesk I was told "they didn't support Firefox any more" - the web browser I use. As I spent 40 years in IT before retiring this surprised me, so I did some checking. Turns out Coventry had "updated" their website so they could get paid for selling their customer's data to online advertisers, and my web browser was rejecting this. Our solution to this issue was to simply move our money to a bank that doesn't do that.  But now I'm worried Nationwide has done the same. I have yet to phone their helpdesk, I will report back.

Seems to be working Ok for me.

Nationwide are rumoured to be working on a new system with a replacement online banking service and app.  When/if that is launched I expect we'll see loads of issues and people finding their setup no longer works... but hopefully not as bad as the TSB disaster.

No problems here logging on with Firefox. I've got FF set to "strict" and "do not sell my stuff" checked, seems OK.

Try it with Chrome. NW's iPad app works fine for me.
  • Update:  I still can't get to most of the Nationwide sites using Firefox, even with www.nationwide.co.uk set as an exception. BUT, onlinebanking.nationwide.co.uk  seems to be fine.  So I can get to our account. Phew...
    I'll keep trying.
To: flaneurs_lobster, Thanks for that reply, If you have FF set to strict, as I have, with no issues, then it must be something at my end I'm missing.
to: wmb194.  My wife has full access with her iPad as well, that's because Safari doesn't do the privacy checking that Firefox does.  Try typing "most secure browser" into google. And to see what all the fuss is about then type "cross-site cookies".  Of course some people like being served "relevant" adverts, but I'm not one of them.

I don’t see any ads in Safari but I’m using an adblocker.

I use different browsers for different things. If it’s important to access your banking you could try a vanilla Chrome and not use it for anything else. That way it’s likely to work and also doubt you’ll be tracked much.

I use Firefox and the Nationwide website and online banking site are both fine. That's also the case with the Coventry website, either you misunderstood what they told you or you got someone who didn't know the right answer and just said something to fob you off. I suspect there's an issue in your Firefox setup, perhaps an add-on causing something not to work right.

Coventry have been telling people Firefox isn't supported anymore - supposedly because Firefox by default gets in the way of Coventry's tracking.  There was a long thread about it a while back -

There are workarounds to get Firefox and Coventry's online banking to work together.... but not out of the box.  Hence probably why Coventry default to the 'Not supported' line.

    From Coventry BS:
    https://www.coventrybuildingsociety.co.uk/member/help/managing-your-money/online-services/using-online-services.html

    Recommended browsers

For the best experience online, we recommend that you use these browsers for both our website and for Online Services:

    Desktops and tablets:

    • Microsoft Edge – latest version
    • Google Chrome – latest version
    • Safari – latest version

    Mobiles:

    • Safari for iOS – latest version
    • Google Chrome – latest version

They may work on other browsers, but there might be certain things you can’t do if you use a browser that isn’t supported.

Always use the latest version of your browser – it’ll help to keep your information safe from online security threats.

I agree that it's probably in the "too hard" basket for them to fully support all browsers, so default to "not supported" outside of the majority used ones.

That said, I use FF at home with a few privacy-related extensions and I've not had issues accessing either Coventry BS or Nationwide online banking.

What workaround do you think is required? Because I can assure you I don't have to do anything in Firefox to get onto the Coventry website, and never have needed to.
