Not really if he only has 7 feedback you are covered for only £150. YOu have raised a dispute. Suggest you consider esclating to a claim. How did you fund the Paypal payment. Please say credit card

I made my credit card the primary source of funding ,then noticed it went out my bank account:rolleyes: cant see the point of having my credit card as primary if it goes and does that.
  • Maybe I am being over-optimistic, but I have received items which were canceled by eBay between payment and receipt. It may have been canceled due to an innocent listing violation and not necessarily because the seller is dishonest.
Wait till the 7th before you escalate?
    Good luck!

Worse comes to the worse on the 8th you phone up your bank & recall the DD I suppose then fund via credit card.

Paypal prefer DD as fees are lower, for debit card fees are fixed so it is better for them on high value items, credit cards are always a %.

Thanks for that,i do think it may well turn up without being naive,i emailed him on 27/12/07 i think it was asking he he could post it sooner, the P+P suggested it would take a while as it was half the normal price for an item like this, and he said it would arrive on the 7th and was sorry for the inconvenience.

Ebay and PayPal are clever and make a bank account the default over a credit card.

When I first started I registered a credit card and later added a bank account. I did not notice that the next few purchases defaulted to the bank account and took me overdrawn. Fortunately my bank waived the charges when I explained. (Thanks First Direct). I deleted the bank account so it wouldn’t happen again.

I have now reinstated the bank account as I needed to withdraw and pay in funds. I am now very careful when I pay with PayPal and I change the funding to a credit card. It is a bit of a pain having to remember that extra step each time. I can’t see a way of making the credit card the default. If anyone knows how to do that please post.

PB, I’ll respond on your OP in my next post.

If you cancel the DD then the bank will refuse the payment, if it hasn't gone through already. If they then take it from your credit card you are most likely to be covered for purchases on the internet not arriving..

    Worth a try!

PB, I am sorry but it would appear that you have either been scammed or the seller has had his account highjacked. I strongly suspect the former.

His home address is not necessarily where he lives and may not help but it is a start. On the off chance that it is somewhere near NW Surrey I might be able to check it out for you.

I can’t offer much more advice than to vigorously pursue a claim through Ebay and PayPal, though you are unlikely to get more than £150 back, and to involve the Police and to consider legal action.

You should report it to the Police and demand that they take it seriously. Obtaining money by deception is a criminal offence so don’t let them fob you off with the “Its a civil matter Sir and we can’t help you” response.

Only consider legal action as a last resort. You could end up spending more time and money for nothing. I have some experience of County Court small claims actions so I would be very happy to help you with that.

Hello... for anyone in doubt - funding paypal with a direct debit does not mean you're protected under the direct debit guarantee. You can't just cancel the direct debit and get your money back.

There are one or two banks that may help in this situation (I can't recall which) but in general, as you authorised the payment, you can't claim it's fraudulent, and you won't get it recalled.

Paypal are annoying in that they make bank funding the default when it's really the LAST way you wanna pay... you just have to be alert and change it every time you make a payment... or remove the direct debit - but again, that presents problems if you ever need to withdraw money.

Fingers crossed that an item does turn up, OP.
