Memorygirl - keep forgetting you''ve moved over here.............lol
My word you are doing well with your charity shop finds and at this rate your home will knock spots off anything Cotswold could offer and don't forget, every piece of furniture has something of 'you' in it and it make your home unique.
Title of first book sounds fine to me...........now are you serious about it being a book cos I for one would buy a copy...........not that I'm young or single with toddlers but simply because I enjoy your writing and think you've done so brilliantly...............keep it up:j

  • I have just come across this blogg. Very interesting and inspiring it is too. Belated congratulations on the birth of your son and also your birthday. Have you moved into your new house yet? I noticed on the grabbit board that B&Q are selling kitchen cupboard doors for £1 each if that is any use to you. I love the chair by the way.

  • Hi memorygirl,

I have loved reading about you, hope you and your family are doing well! Your posts have been an inspiration to me, every time I read one it gives me the motivation to get up and get on with something!

I have also enjoyed reading other readers stories about Make Do and Mend. I can remember as a child watching my Dad fix up our old cars using parts from the scrapyard. He followed the directions in a Haynes manual for the car model. As he is a painter and decorator to trade this showed remarkable skill and determination, he says he just started doing it through necessity. The work was accompanied by a lot of blood sweat and swearing!

My Mum too always repaired things, she knitted and sewed and I can remember her having a big baking day when she baked lots of things. I also remember her frustration as we stood watching her making pancakes, eating them as fast as she could get them out of the pan!

I think happy family times are often made of what we do together rather than what we have. I felt so important as a child helping my Mum and Dad and will always be grateful to them for that. Its also given me the desire to be a Make Do and Mender myself!

Hi Memorygirl, Congratulations on the birth of your baby. I think you are doing a wonderful job, and are a very strong lady. It is no mean feat being a lone parent as I was one a very long time ago, and it was darned hard. Your little boys have a terrific Mum. God Blessxx

There is no point in negative thought, it takes up time and energy which could be used in a positive, happy way!
  • Great that this was on the weekly email

    Enjoyed reading through
  • Wow
I've just read through your whole thread, i feel so in spired. We have just been going through the buying a new house ringger. The pennies are very tight and will be for a while. I will need to be packing quiet soon but, a declutter and then recyle the bits on e-bay, amazon, boot sales and freecycle is the way forward.

I'm not at all good with "making things" i can cook to a level and have been a member of the grocery challenge for quiet a few months and not done too bad and have found load of recipes from the great people who post there. So although i know i can't make to the extent you have achived but, i know i can make do and mend far more than i do now to keep the pennies with me.

Thanks i will keep following your great work.:T :T

    DAY 4 - PART 2
Sorted out my Menu plan for 2008 - the OS / SW one. Will make a project to collect all the recipes into my control journal over the next few weeks (so that when I move and the box of cookery books goes missing - as it inevitably will - I won't be lost)

got 4 portions of white beans soaking to make baked beans in SC then into freezer for instance.

Hi Memory Girl, just to say, great thread, really inspiring. I have just started reading from the beginning (on page 2 at the mo!), but thought I would start saving questions as I go, or I'll loose the plot. :D

How do you run your control journal? is it an excel sheet? I love anything techy so it would really help me keep control of my stuff too. Also, how do you make baked beans? I'd love to make my own.

Hope you don't mind me asking,

I do home staging, so am often after ways to save people money and make homes look good for a fraction of the price - ebay/freecycle/charity shops obviously feature heavily in my list of places to go. I also have to lengthen curtains with scraps of fabric, make tuck cushions from old jumpers, create artwork, etc, so have loved hearing how you are renovating your furniture.

Keep up the good work! I'll look forward to hearing more. :T

PS: I know it was a couple of months ago now, but congrats on baby memory too

after being prompted to by MSE email I have just finished reading this whole thread and sorry to reiterate what others have said, but it has been an ispiration to me! I feel very guilty that I don't do half of what you do Memory Girl and yet I always cry poverty and stretch my funds to the very limit. I have resolved to be more OS and change myself and my family's lives for the better in future!
Thank you for the tips and your pleasant style of writing. You really should make this into a book because you're a natural.
Keep it coming and I'll be watching and reading with interest.

    Love jooy x:T
