When to pay.The signs are pretty much useless.I spent ages finding a way around the Bath clean air zone to avoid going through the city centre. Which is really difficult as that's the big main road. Or, at least, to see the signs and take the responsibility to do a little bit of basic research.Ectophile said:Yes, there are big signs. But somehow a passing motorist who doesn't even live in the area is supposed to know all the details of the zone.

Bath - Class C, Buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, vans, minibuses
So not private cars.
They're all Euro4 petrol, Euro6 diesel, because that's where NOx - which they're aimed at - fell to the current new-diesel levels.
Check your car's compliance - https://www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones

I think you answered your own question.
You see a sign & do not understand if you need to pay, in such cases should prompt a check by the driver to see if they have to pay or not.
As the saying goes ignorance of the law is not a excuse.Life in the slow lane2 -

As the saying goes ignorance of the law is not a excuse. So on seeing the sign, I have to find somewhere I can park (which is easier said than done in a city where everywhere is a permit zone), then get the phone out and start researching a LEZ that I didn't even know was there until I saw the sign! All because the sign has no information that's any use to anybody. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
When I went to Bath recently I used Google Maps to plan my route, it flagged up there was a clean air zone and I looked into it (well, asked my passenger to look into it) before I was anywhere near the city centre.Ectophile said:born_again said:

No internet at home to research where you are going? If all teh information was applied to on street furniture, it would either be so big that it would block the road, or the print so small that you wouldn't be able to read it without stopping.Ectophile said:born_again said:Ectophile said:born_again said:

With the prevalance of clean air zones, bus lanes, bus gates etc now I would think it would be prudent to check out any city you are going to enter, if you are not familiar with it.

You said "Some time later, I found that private cars are exempt from the fees"
So all you need to do is check later on, as you clearly did.
All you need to do is check one site
https://multiple-vehiclecheck-pay.drive-clean-air-zone.service.gov.uk/what_would_you_like_to_do
Tick "Check Vehicle", enter reg & it gives the result for ALL CAZ 👍Life in the slow lane0 -
If you see the signs they should tell you how to pay. However they should advise you of a way to avoid entering the clean air zone, as the idea is to discourage high polluting vehicles. It does seem odd that it would be suggested as a diversion for high polluting vehicles.lordmountararat said:

Why would anybody assume that existing traffic regulations are simply dispensed with ?lordmountararat said:My sister was caught out by innocently following diversion signs after the M5 was closed following an accident. She wrongly assumed that allowance would be made in these circumstances.0
