Why would anybody assume that existing traffic regulations are simply dispensed with ?lordmountararat said:My sister was caught out by innocently following diversion signs after the M5 was closed following an accident. She wrongly assumed that allowance would be made in these circumstances.1 -
Because of the exceptional circumstances. No chance to pay the charge and no alternative but to follow the diversion signs.Hoenir said:

You can pay up to 6 days after travel so not sure how there is no chance to pay the charge?lordmountararat said:

If its "exceptional circumstances" then its also exceptional circumstances for the scheme and they won't have a way not to charge people.2 -
I'm guessing you came in over the Severn Bridge, M49, and up the A4.
Your first image shows you were photographed on the A370 Brunel Way, just north of the airport.
Your second image shows you were photographed on the A4 Hotwells Road, under the Clifton bridge.
Assuming those were where you LEFT the zone...
Then these are the signs you passed as you entered the zone from the west, having passed others beforehand warning of the approach.

These are the signs you passed as you entered from the south, having passed others beforehand warning of the approach.

It's not exactly a state secret.
So, having seen those signs, you didn't think "Oooh, I wonder" and do a bit of investigating? Check the reg here:
https://vehiclecheck.drive-clean-air-zone.service.gov.uk/vehicle_checkers/enter_details
It's £9 each day charge for entering the zone in a non-compliant car, and £60 penalty for failing to pay.
The thresholds for Bristol for compliance are the same as most other CAZs in the country - Euro4 petrol (2005ish), Euro6 diesel (2015ish).
Your 2009 Merc CLC200? Not compliant.
It's Euro4, probably, maybe Euro5 - does the V5C give a NOx or PM figure? 0.180g NOx and 0.005 PM are the Euro5 limits, down from 0.250 and 0.25 for Euro4.
Euro6 was focussed on NOx, with a cap of 0.08g. If your car meets that, it's exempt, but you'll need to provide proof.
BTW, if you'd stayed on the M5 to Gordano, then up the west of the Ashton Court estate, you'd have missed the fairly small zone entirely. Google Maps even reckons 10min quicker, albeit a mile longer, and no city traffic. The benefits of a little bit of journey planning, and not just blithely following the satnav, eh?

Always carry a road atlas myself in the car.lordmountararat said:

You don't have to ONLY use GoogleMaps for blithely following its route suggestion. You can look at the map and figure out yourself what makes most sense.
Urban low emission zones should not be a surprise to anybody. ESPECIALLY somebody living just 30 miles from where the zone that apparently surprised them.1 -
I’ll try and remove the image. Thanks0
