It’s hard to believe that there isn’t anyone left  who doesn’t know the 10 year rule by now for travel to the EU, it has been done to death on all media outlets

I'd never heard of the 10 year rule until reading this thread. Then again, I've never experienced (or heard of) a passport validity longer than 10 years either so I would have had no need to know about it. :)

My passport issued in 2015 had 10 years and 8 months on it.
I've been aware since Brexit that the 8 months may cause a problem.

This has been discussed on lots of threads on here and in the media.

Well – I gave up and have to swallow this somehow.

I feel disappointed to read the photome comment – you would be surprised how many don’t know. Well, simply put, I think the Home Office could send either a letter or an email informing people. Media outlets are not official sources of information to digest; I may choose not to read any British bullsh*t media house for that matter.

Thanks for everyone’s comments. The Jet2 lady who guided me is the winner, and all others are losers.

As per other posts, it's your responsibility to ensure you have valid travel documents.

The Jet 2 lady who guided you (wrongly) is lucky that you weren't flirted back to the UK as soon as you landed. Her employer would have been fined.
You are lucky too. You could have ended up back where you started.

    That's not being a winner.
On the other hand, it could be argued that getting away with giving out incorrect information and keeping your job, all while leaving a customer impressed, would count as winning!

    Quite possibly.

But if she's not up to the job (and she clearly isn't) she may not keep that job for very long.

And, of course, she is not the winner in the context that the OP meant.

It might be one of those things that if you know, you naturally expect everyone to know.

Mrs G_C and I plan to go away in September (not yet booked) but Mrs G_C's passport was issued Nov 2015, but expiry date August 2026.  In fact, we were looking at booking and checked the passport before doing so as we'd heard about the 10-year thing and knew that was about now.

Anyway, on Friday (yesterday), Mrs G_C went to the local Post Office to renew her passport using the "Digital Check & Send" service.  She reports that the staff in the Post Office branch pushed back altogether on doing the renewal on the basis the passport was valid until next summer.  My wife explained the ten-year thing.  The staff claimed ignorance and only eventually gave in with a shrug and commented along the lines of "well, if you want to waste your money renewing early, that's up to you".  This is an individual who really ought to have been trained on the rules.

That's only an analogy and does not make the acceptance to fly by Jet 2 any more correct.

But your wife's passport would be valid for a trip to the EU in September, as long as she returned by May 2026 - obviously it's the holder's decision, and she wouldn't have been able to enter the EU after November 2025 on it, but the post office staff were correct that renewal now is premature, albeit maybe still not being completely accurate about why?

was issued Nov 2015, but expiry date August 2026.

The 10 year rule and expiry date are separate

to travel 15th September 2025 (example) your passport must have been issued after15th September 2015
to return 29th September 2025 the expiry date printed on your passport must be after 29th December 2025

    so passport would be fine

at the start some airlines made errors and assumed the expiry date was 10 years after issue date rather than the one printed on it and this was clarified as incorrect and the printed expiry date is still the expiry date

    OK - thanks.

So we have even misunderstood the lay-persons explanations, such as that given here:
Martin Lewis: Two passport checks before you go abroad

We read all that as meaning we needed three months validity and three months until the ten-year date.
You are now saying we could have travelled as still under ten years and still having three months validity.

Too late now, as the fee has been paid and the old passport sent.
