It’s hard to believe that there isn’t anyone left who doesn’t know the 10 year rule by now for travel to the EU, it has been done to death on all media outlets
OP , Ryanair were right , Jet2 were wrong but you probably know that now3 -

In fact the only person/company to come out of this with any credit is Ryanair, which will likely irk some!7 -
At the end off the day what really matters here is Ryanair's T and C as highlighted by @vacheron
Just like they will prevent people flying domestic where no one mandates photo id except the airline and if you don't have it you don't go
All the rest about what some other airline or some other website might or might not say is irrelevant
It is not fair of the OP to claim that Ryanair were incompetent and perhaps they should change the thread title as it is misleading as Ryanair did not wrongly do anything

Ultimately it doesn't matter what any other airline, immigration agents or even the UK or Italian govs say. An airline can specify their own made up conditions to travel, which as vacheron says is 10 years from passport issue date. Sure most would align it to the official government advice because what's the point of restricting your market and angering a bunch of customers. But that doesnt' mean they HAVE to match.. so they can't be wrong if they don't match what the 'official' rule is for entry to Italy.0

Comments since must (surely?) have convinced the OP that no compensation from Ryanair will be forthcoming.
Lots of thread titles are misleading when an original poster believes they have been wronged but in reality they haven't.

Not all people are regular travellers so may not have reason to even think about passports for several years.

Dont think there is much more to add other than I hope the OP returns to let us know how his quest for reimbursement/compensation goes.0

Well – I gave up and have to swallow this somehow.
I feel disappointed to read the photome comment – you would be surprised how many don’t know. Well, simply put, I think the Home Office could send either a letter or an email informing people. Media outlets are not official sources of information to digest; I may choose not to read any British bullsh*t media house for that matter.
Thanks for everyone’s comments. The Jet2 lady who guided me is the winner, and all others are losers.
A passport gives you many privileges and rights, but with those come responsibilities. It's a citizen's responsibility to understand how their passport works and to read and understand the requirements of the destination country before they travel. You screwed up. We all have or will in one walk of life at some point. Sometimes its no-one else's fault but your own, and as you say, it has to be swallowed. It cost you £600 but at least you did get away in the end, even though you technically shouldn't have been allowed to, so it's not as bad as it could have been.9
