I had a feeling though you needed to have paid for something from a business that accepted Mastercard credit cards during the period the case covered.

That's my understanding having read the article too, though not necessarily with a Mastercard. Must surely mean the vast majority will qualify.

No.it is genuine - Mastercard were found to have overcharged and have been required to repay

£45-£70  is not much but hey it's a free portion if fish and chips which is better than nothing.
£45 is if 5% of people claim... if 100% of people claimed it would be £2.50. Wouldnt get a free fish and chips around here.

To be honest I think their sums are bad and it would be less but there we go

He began the case attempting to claim £14bn and settled for £200m. The firm funding the law case tried to prevent settlement at this lower amount, but ultimately lost.

Note: it'll be £45 per person if 5% of potential claimants put in a claim. The final payout could be a lot lower if more than 5% of people claim.

Thanks for that well @born_again won't be claiming so.that's a bit more for those that do claim ! :)
Think again. 4 bank accounts around that time + Mrs as well 😍

Always claim direct. Bit of work never hurt anyone when it comes to getting money back.

Sadly too many are more than happy to pay the leeches to do the work & lose out 🤣
It's per person, not per account. You dont even need to have had an account, the idea is that retailers (eg Tesco) charged everyone a little more than they had to because Mastercard was overcharging all retailers. So as long as you were buying "stuff" you suffered a loss no mater how you were paying.

The fact that half the compensation has gone to those funding the litigation rather than those that have sustained a loss speaks volumes too

Not a chance.  Charity begins at home.

Amusingly, the phrase actually was intended to mean the opposite of that, Thomas Fuller popularised the saying but the full version is

Charity begins at home, but should not end there

The idea is that here, if you are provided for, you should give this money to others who need it more.

I tend to see people who use the phrase typically aren't actually interested in charity for home either, it's just used to mean they should get theirs and not anyone else

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

If eligible I'll donate my nice little earner to a suitable charity - like Michelle Mone rehabilitation fund. :D
Seriously though - how are they going to administer this - and how does one apply ?

    This is nonsensical.

Anybody can apply if they shopped at any place that accepted Mastercard, anywhere, at any time, for any amount, during a really long extended period.

Almost everybody who sees this will apply, and end up getting 4p each (I haven’t done the maths, but you get my point).

Hopefully most people will think along these lines and not bother.

Yet another article - Mastercard to pay out £100M to millions of customers - find out if YOU are eligible and how easy it is to claim

    ...
The entire settlement is for £200million, with £100million of this ringfenced for shoppers who have until the end of this year to claim, with the rest expected to go to the company that funded the lawsuit and the Access to Justice Foundation.

You don't need to have owned a Mastercard at any point to be eligible for compensation.
Consumers who lived in England, Wales or Northern Ireland for at least three months between June 1997 and June 2008, and bought goods or services from UK businesses that accepted Mastercard credit cards will be eligible to claim compensation.
If you lived in Scotland for at least three months between May 1992 and June 2010 you will also be eligible to make a claim.
