Dinner plates to last a lifetime

As per the title, I’m looking to buy some new dinner plates for everyday use. We currently have 1 x Corelle set which has been going for 20 years+. They are dishwasher proof and seem to be hard wearing, so we will keep using those.
But I could do with an additional 4 dinner plates, side plates & breakfast bowls. I looked at some glazed stoneware and must admit they look beautiful. But I have heard they don’t last as long as other options. What would people suggest if you want a ‘buy it for life’ type option - bone china or porcelain?

I bought an 18 piece set from Ikea tail end of 2018 to replace a hodgepodge collection that had been in use since <mumble><mumble> '70s. Also added a set of deep plates from the same range (now discontinued). Nothing fancy, and in plain white - Figured it would be fairly easy to get replacements should anything get broken or I wanted to add extras.Has stood up well to daily use, and just one small chip out of the edge of a single deep plate. Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -
Bone china is bright white where true porcelain has a translucent tinge.
Because I was in the trade I had royal Worcester cookware. Sadly it's not the same quality now but still better than most for staying pristine.
Don't know if it's still going but Duchess China used to be excellent for quality at a reasonable price

Hmm not keen on the designs.
Here's Spode, like most taken over but nice classic dinner ware. I have some hand painted original Spode and it's been used daily since 1990 and still looking like new. Got to be good still being an amalgamation of two top brands.

This is perhaps not me but if you want longevity could be the way to go. They will have a factory shop.
I've got a fine bone china, white with gold edge, dinner service from Green shield Stamps in the 70s and still fine.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

I use Imperial Blue Denby every day. It’s still going strong after 25 years. I’ve had to replace the odd thing due to breakages through dropping, but I’ve never had anything chip or break in normal use. You will always be able to get a matching replacement if needed as I doubt they’ll discontinue.0

I'd recommend Denby.
There are Facebook groups buying & selling second hand Denby if you fancy some of the older designs0 -
We picked up a set of these Johnson "Farmhouse chic" about 15 years back from a discount place at Clarks Village near Glastonbury. A couple of months later I spotted some extra pieces to go along with it at TKMaxx.

Now I come from a family that swears by plain, off/white plates as that's what mom bought in 1952 (and most are , unlike mom, still going strong). But these are so jolly I was quite happy with them. The pattern is no longer current but it shows a certain sturdy quality that can be found. In addition we have some Ikea bits which don't impress me much. I mean, they're ok, sturdy (ish) but aren't particularly nice being dull.
We also have some expensive Mikasa bone china that seems to have chipped very easily - I would happily be rid of them but as luck would have it soon after we bought the basics my mom bought us 8 of the small fruit bowls (we also referred to them as fruit nappies, don't know why). And so it's hard to get rid of a partial set when you have moved the extra 8 small bowls across the Atlantic.

Another vote for Denby. I've been using the Greenwich daily for 30 years. I haven't had to replace anything yet0

Another vote for Denby. We bought a modern set some time pre-lockdown and with the exception of one chipped dinner plate, everything's intact. The white of the dinner plates shows small grey marks from cutlery after a while, but those can be polished with a mild abrasive like toothpaste to minimise them.
I also collect Denby 'Homestead' which went out of production in 1986 or 87. The dinner plates, side plates and saucers are harder to find now but the lovely chocolate and eggshell blue cups are in regular use, and the serving dishes and jugs are used sometimes. Denby assures me they are safe in the dishwasher despite their age.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
