You should never leave yourself without enough cash for an emergency especially if work only pays SSP. Could you compromise and pay off half the remaining mortgage?
that is the sort of thing I would go for - best of both worlds! However I have just seen your other post about the penalty for leaving things in the account, so like the 0% cc in case of emergencies...

I just got all excited last nite reading here, and playing with the calculators, til like 2.45am!!!
*yawns*
OK, I've got the bug and wannabe MF. Have already been overpaying and offsetting for a few years now.
Don't have any targets as yet, requires more calculations and a makeover of the household budget. - but I'm getting a Mortg Pig ASAP, got first dosh scrambled together for it now!
Gosh this is weirdly exciting! :j
Will set targets etc, when I can...may be some time tho...as I'm a bit pedantic, and will have to consider lots before till I can set proper goals.
Really looking forward to the challenge now and to supporting everyone here as well and swapping ideas to find spare funds etc. :TBless Martin's Little Cotton Socks. I thank him for giving us MSE. Look what its grown into!

Just overpaid by £50.00 again for June - I'll pm you bellsbells. What I'm finding amazing is, I get the Halifax to print me out a mortgage statement on a regular basis, so I can see how I'm doing, and although I've only overpaid £500 in total so far, the actual balance has gone down by quite a bit more - obviously due to the fact that more of the regular monthly payment is reducing the balance month by month. :money:
If any of you haven't had a statement for a while ask for one & you may be pleasantly surprised!!:j£10 a day extra in May '18[B]£35/310[

Sorted out OH car insurance and breakdown cover last week so should have £65 cashback through Quidco to go straight at the mortgage! I am in the habit of wasting Quidco money but must be more focused and see it as a mortgage OP.0

My OP for June is a measly £10
Never mind. well done to the rest of you, another month down!0 -

It was when I started using the mortgage feature of the programme that I became determined (obsessed really) with reducing my mortgage and giving myself a target date of more than 8 years early.
Joining in with the gang on this thread has pushed me even further to try and bring my date even closer, I am looking to finish this year instead of early next year (still working on the details).
As hummingbird has said it is well worth getting a statement if you can as it lets you see the impact even the smallest overpayment now can make in the long term.0 -
Hello and well done to everyone :T :T :T
There are six months of this 2008 challenge left and everyone is doing really well
Bellsbells I've just updated sig, we've overpaid £496 in June putting us ahead of target, trying extra hard as OH is being made redundant in September and existing tracker ends November:eek:   . So overpayment amounts will probably fall then.2016 MFW OPd £2000, 2015 MFW OPd 3000 then bought new bigger house with bigger mortgage.Beautiful boys born May 2011 and October 2013

bellsbells wrote: »Welcome to the thread for everyone starting their MFW journey in 2008. Please feel free to join at any time and your name will be added to the list along with any specific overpayment goals you have for the year. I will do an update each month on our progress so we can see how we are all doing and offer each other support, ideas and encouragement!
There is no cut off point for joining the thread and the challenge (except the 31st December:rotfl: ) so if at any point this year you are ready to start working on becoming mortgage free please join us! Your target can be as specific or general as you like.
Good luck to all!
