Can we get a refund

My wife and son are flying to South America via Miami with American airlines.
Their flight home was due to leave at 14.30 but now it is going to be 00.30.
This is a big change - can they get a refund?
I have contacted the agency but no reply yet.

To add insult to injury we could have bought flights at that time for less but my wife didn't want to go then.

    "
If we or our airline partner cancels your flight or your departure or arrival is delayed for 3 or more hours (domestic) / 4 or more hours (international), our sole obligation is to refund the unused ticket value and any optional fees according to our involuntary refunds policy, subject to our policy for rebooking your delayed / canceled flight."

Looks like as it is over a 4 hour delay, you should be able to get a refund.

Actually this is not a delay it is leaving 14 hours early - i.e removing part of the holiday.

Have you checked to see if other flight options are available.  You only mention South America.

Was this a flight-only booking or a package?

If the former, then you're at the mercy of the airline's Ts & Cs, unless you can find any regulations that cover the flights - the majority of the discussion on these boards is about the UK/EU regulations, which don't apply here.  Or if it's a proper travel agency, as opposed to a cheap 'bucket shop', then they may be in a position to add some value?

It is flight only but perhaps I should have been clearer the flight UK via Miami to South America and back again.
The problem is with the return.

Sure, I did understand that you were referring to the inbound leg and hence the issue - the equivalent rescheduling on the outbound one would have fallen within the scope of the UK regulations.

Thanks for that I mistakenly thought that as they (not me fortunately) are flying on a flight starting and finishing in the UK they were covered by the UK regulations.

Sorry we did when we bought the tickets but of course we have now spent the money (there were cheaper flights but they took longer - ha ha)
