Obviously it’s good to have an emergency fund but not everyone learns that at a young age.Credit card 2395

How are you supposed to pay the deposit on your next room?Schwarzwald said:
No, actually it isnt… why would you even consoder that acceptable?itsthelittlethings said:It’s only really acceptable not to pay your rent for the last month if your deposit covers the rent.So if the tenant has damaged the property requiring repair to be covered by the deposit, and then doesnt pay the last month, you think this is acceptable?
odd thinking
how is the landlord supposed to get his last month’s rent AND potentially cost cover for any damages caused to the property?
your view is VERY tenant-only.3 -
That’s not the point of the deposit (and I speak as someone who, until March, has rented for many years). The deposit isn’t the last month’s rent for the landlord or the next month’s rent for the tenant. It’s there to cover any damage beyond normal wear and tear.itsthelittlethings said:

The landlord has all the money but the tenant is the one paying extra? Most landlords spend as little as they can get away with on maintenance.Credit card 2395

But it’s not a political discussion. In England (the only rental system I know), tenants pay rent and a deposit is held with a deposit protection scheme. That deposit is to cover damage above normal wear and tear. The landlord gets the rental income. The tenant gets somewhere to live. And, at the end, the deposit is returned minus any deductions for damage. It’s not there for any other purpose, certainly not to pay the last month’s rent or the tenants next deposit.itsthelittlethings said:
