Re Liquid paraffin.....I just use a small syringe and squirt it into the side of her mouth, the bonus is that it makes so much easier to get her tablets down her!!! This is a cat that can hold a tablet in her mouth for ages before she spits it out:D

Thanks freejunkie and orlao for the info. How often do you give your cat/s paraffin? How do you know when to? With our old lady we don't know she's got a fur ball until she starts coughing and the ball comes out straightaway. Don't really get any warning......she coughs and its out. Well....she doesn't cough it out as such, she really struggles and has to vomit it out.

    Sorry if thats TMI :o

My two furry fluffballs are about 8 now and have lived a happy life so far on dried food with the occasional wet food as a treat. Giving dried food in it welf will not cause diabetes or other illnesses. Particualrly not if your cat drinks plenty of water with it. Check with your vet to see if your cat might have any kidney etc problems that means you should be feeding something else than standard food. If your cat HAS any sign of problems then certainly don't carry on feeding dry food - same as if a human has high colesterol (sp?) then you should alter your diet accordingly :) Or if they have a gluten intolerance... you wouldn't keep eating normal bread everyday if you were intolerant to gluten would you? :)
Before giving things like parafin I would also recommend speaking to your vet - I had to give my dog it once when she stole a roast chicken carcass (blooming animals!) but I wouldn't start giving it without checking with a vet first! After all you might be potentially hiding the symptoms of something more serious that needs to be treated :)

My cat has bad belly all the time. We tok him to the vets and this is what I was told to do.

    1. Starved him for 1 day
    2. Boiled a whole Coley fish (very cheap from the fish counter) and feed him that until it runs out as its very bland.
    3. Put him back on his normal diet. If it happens all the time, he should eat science plan, a bit more expensive but it will sort himout.

As your cat is middle aged and may be starting to have kidney issues, it may be an idea to try the Hills i/d wet canned food (add water as it's sticky to nosh) which most of them like and which is quite a lot lower in phosphorus (bad for kidneys) than the Royal Canin sensitivity pouches. The latter are probably better to try if kidneys aren't an issue. Both are more balanced than just feeding fish for eg, as just fish will mean your cat lacks nutrients. I found that after a certain age, the prescription diets became essential for my cats. They are a lot cheaper online than from the vet's. However you might like to try a can or pouch or two from the vet first as both Hills and RC will take unused food back if your cat won't eat them. If it's a furball and constipation issue making your cat sick, instead of liquid paraffin or katalax (which mine hated being given and it seemed to make them feel sick) you could try lactulose syringed into the mouth at night? It's sticky and sweet and they seem to mind it less.
Another tip for regurg vomiting is to put your cat's plate up a bit eg on phone books (!) so that his head's higher when he eats. Little and often if you can manage it also works well as it's easier on the tum and internal organs and if they are less hungry, they may eat less fast. HTH.

As a Cats Protection volunteer, we had to deal with various food problems with the foster cats, and usually Felix was the best 'regular' food for them. White fish like coley or chicken and rice, with lots of warm water, would usually settle an upset stomach, but that's a short term solution not a long term one. Are you sure your cat isn't getting food elsewhere? Our cat used to raid the neighbours garden, and eat the dry bread they left out for the birds!

The main advantage of feeding dry food was that the cats teeth stayed cleaner, so less chance of an op at the vets to remove / clean them as the cats got older.
