Is this because of new rules by OFCOM where companies have to specify exactly how much contracts are going up by, instead of just a percentage?

Have a Sim Only from O2, started £5 a month for the first year, then last April increased to £5.44 (Over 8% increase). Now it's £7.24, an increase of £1.80 a month, over 30%.

Yep, one of Martin's backfired campaigns.  If you are happy with the O2 network move to an MVNO using their system who do not impose the annual increase, I am not paying any increase this year with my provider. https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cheap-mobile-finder/sim-only-filters/

I'm not sure why he thought the fixed increase campaign was any good, inflation wasn't going to remain in double digits for ever

Exactly the reason I left O2.

Lebara for less than 50p a month is serving me fine.

Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

If you specifically want to stay with O2, and you don't need much data then this £5/month deal for 1GB (or 2GB with volt) still seems to work including for existing O2 customers: https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/o2-sim-1gb-data-2gb-27-non-eu-roaming-with-volt-unltd-minstext-eu-roaming-ps5-pm-for-12-mths-3-months-free-disney-amazon-prime-4565350 (click on the "Get deal" button on that page)

I got a 50gb O2 renewal from a comparison site ( not uSwitch, they no longer do them ) at £8 a month.

My existing contract went up to £17 so I'm paying half what I was

Always worth a bit of research and a read through the current offers on hot UK deals

O2 renewals (aka upgrades) are back on Uswitch, albeit their £8/mth deal is only 32GB.
Which site has that 50GB deal?

My 40GB 02 deal for just over £8 was going up by £1:50 so now on Lebara 50GB for 42 pence until September.

Always worth researching and I appreciate that actual coverage plays a big part in what you will choose.

    Thanks for the replies.
O2 is handy because of the Volt upgrade you get with Virgin Media but I may just order a Lebara Sim anyway for the cheap offers. The mobile internet on Lebara (my wife has their Sim), is much better than I get on O2 which is very slow.
Come back to O2 later in the year if there are offers available, maybe.
    The price increases are weird.

The price increases are for the great unwashed who cannot determine the likely cost when it is expressed as a percentage, plus the unknown annual CPI/RPI inflation rate. This was mandated by OFCOM and is not specific to O2.

We moved away from fixed contracts some time ago, yes with care they can be good value, but the lack of flexibility was outweighed by the ability to change providers easily and without penalty.

One of our phones is on GiffGaff (O2) and the other on 1p Mobile (EE). GG are cheaper for EU calls (6p per min to land lines), 1p are 9p per min, GG have an easy to use App, 1p only offer a web page. On the other hand, 1p have free roaming in the EU plus the Channel Is and Isle of Man, GG only offer EU roaming.

It depends whether you need roaming/overseas calls (we do) and whether you are happy to be tied to a long contract.

I am just about to take that contract.
My existing contract has gone up to £18 a month.
When I looked at the O2 website after signing in the contracts on offer are very expensive, yet going through a comparison site they are much cheaper.
I am worried there is a catch that I have missed.
