Interestingly I did the sums based on trying to compare Eon-Next's equivalent to the Octopus Cozy tariff and without faffing around with all my heating controls and not eating our evening meals between 4 and 7pm it would cost us £1 more a day as we really dont use much energy during the night. Its all day as we are at home all day.

I used half hourly reads on our peak usage day this year and used the rates at those times.

After minor discussions about trying to alter our eating and heating habits, together with when she wants to use the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher etc, I decided that the potential and fairly minor savings weren't worth the amount of internal grief and strife it would cause in our house.

So we'll stay with our reasonable fixed deal which is still around 5p/kwh less than the present cap.

Last winter on Cosy, we averaged an import price of ~19p over Dec-Feb, with usage upto 40kWh per day, but that was with considerable time shifting of our usage. A battery would allow us to charge and discharge at the cheap slots (say 15p vs our previous average of 19p), but would only afford minimal savings of 4-5p per kWh but would allow us not to have to worry about when to turn the oven/washing machine/dishwasher/heating on which was a major cause of strife and discomfort.
Whether a battery is false economy, I don't know. That purchase price would have paid for a lot of electricity at peak rate up front, and rates will undoubtedly be very different a few years from now (which may help or hinder our ROI), but it gives us energy security and no overall annual bills plus we are completely self sufficient and effectively off grid (bar exporting) for 6 months of the year.
