Well in my house my parents aren't big TV watchers so my PC monitor is now as big as the family TV (20").
I think 32" will be as big as I would ever have in a flat or small house. You really need to have a big room for a larger TV than that.

We are looking at buying an LCD shortly, planning on 22". Small by most standards but think it will be appropriate size for our living room.

How far you sit from the TV is an important consideration. There's no point getting a 46" screen if you're only going to sit 5 feet away. Also, as I saw in a friend's house, for 10-12 feet away, a 32" TV is too small.
