AMEX require you to spend +£3000 to be eligible for cash back earned, I assume this would not include refunded items?

We’ve been using another card this last 12 months but have £35 cash back due paid next month, including a £25 referral bonus and would be a shame to lose it.

Haven't checked the cashback t&cs but I bet that refunds get taken off your spend tally.

How much do you need to spend?

Whenever I have a pressing need to spend a lot quickly I go and see my dentist.

    And he takes Amex.

    Looks like about £1200 short.

    My dentist doesn’t take AMEX!

Council Tax? Some councils take Amex.  If you're with Octopus Energy you can add funds to your account with credit card and they take Amex.  Best thing with that route is once you're in credit you can request a refund, and they refund direct to your bank account. Other energy companies may be the same.

Thnks, I’ve checked the Council tax and they don’t take Amex, however I am with Octopus so I will load the count with an appropriate amount!

    Gift cards purchased in supermarkets
PayPoint bills (utility, council tax etc) paid at Co-op Group Stores (ones with the white/cyan logo; not Central, Midcounties, Southern, Scotmid, Lincs etc. Co-ops).

WillPS is correct, CT can be paid at some Paypoint even if your council doesn't take Amex.

I was looking at applying for an AMEX cashback card only this weekend and the product details were very clear and obvious that the spend for cashback is reduced by any refunds to the card.
I would be extremely surprised if that information did not get replicated in the formal terms & conditions.
I am aware that AMEX have different card choices with cashback eligibility but I would also be surprised if the same rules did not apply to all such cards.
If it were not that way, the scheme would be open to "massaging" - buy something big and expensive.  Take the cash back.  Return the item for a refund.  If the cashback was not also rescinded, it would be a case of free money.

Agreed - I pay my council tax at Co-op using Amex via PayPoint.

Your council does have to support PayPoint though. Some, like mine, support PayZone instead - some success stories paying these with Amex at Tesco Express and Spar but I've never tried.

The Octopus route backfired a little as I deposited £1000 and requested a £700 refund which they did. Unfortunately they refunded it to AMEX 🙄
