  • I haven't read whole thread, so forgive me if this is mentioned earlier. The 'Nationwide' has a facility for opening up to 4 Flex Accounts (current accounts) and seemingly Un-ending amount of 'e-savings' accounts (I am up to about 10 at the moment!). It is also possible to give the accounts personalised names - which is really helpful. As an example one of mine is 'new_frock'! This has REALLY helped me with 'piggy banking' and budgeting in general so wanted to pass it on.

I get paid fortnightly. There's no option for me to enter this.
  • You used the example of Mr Micawber (David Copperfield), but he is of course unable to live within his means and is constantly in debt. The quotation is from a scene in which he laments his wont of frugality to a sympathetic David Copperfield.

Hardly a "MoneySaver before his time" :D

I understand about the Piggybanking technique but what if you can't open six accounts in a bank/banks? I can't as my credit rating is too bad, I have one bank account but can't open any more, no one will have me!
I know this is an old post, but incase you havent managed to get answer. These days banks have to give you a bank account - apply for a basic bank account, you will only be allowed one with each provider, but with online banking these days that shouldnt be a problem as you can transfer between most providers these days free of charge within 2 hours
  • I have been piggybanking for about two years with 3 bank accounts and 3 savings accounts for different things. I use MoneyManagerEX software linking across my PC and tablet. I record and check my spend daily (almost too obsessive) but at least do not keep my head in the sand over my expenses. It has worked well for us and enables us to plan ahead and save.
  • Same as others. I have done save as, opened in Excel and the front sheet is protected. It needs a password

I have now right clicked several times and am still getting the protected item message and i need a password. Twice when I've opened the download its just been gobbledegook that has opened. Do I need to go through internet explorer instead of Mozilla Firefox? I've been trying for over an hour and I really really really am right clicking.

    The Password is "money"
The Budget Planner is about 10 years old & there are many other free spreadsheets out there that you may find helpful.

  • Hi
Ive been using the piggybanking technique for a few years without even reading about it here.
I'm with Barclays and wanted an account to put an endownment in that wasn't going to be ravaged by direct debits so I opened their low interest e-savings account knowing I'd be moving the money to an ISA as soon as.
After I realised how easy it was to open a new "in-house" account I opened three more to reflect my interests ie "gigs" "holidays" etc.
Now I've been made redundant I have renamed the accounts to make it easy to budget my redundancy money. I have no debts so Ive moved most of the money into a new 30 day notice ISA and kept just over enough to pay myself £500 per month to live on/pay bills etc.
I use a free program called MyMicroBalance to keep a track of where all my money is.
Love your site and have used it loads since I lost my job. Keep up the good work
  • Great stuff neastline! You've probably done the Money Makeover but just in case... :)
