  • I have just been browsing round their systems (control panel too) on a mac using camino (open-source, mozilla/gecko based), and had no rendering problems whatsoever. I have more problems on this forum than I did on their systems.

    Edit to add:

In fact, it works fine on Firefox (Version 2.0.0.11), Safari (Version 3.0.4 (523.12.2)), and Camino (Version 2007112812 (1.5.4)). The only browser I have it doesn;t render properly on is Internet Explorer (Version 5.2.3 - the latest available for mac).

These are all Mac versions of these browsers.

This may look like a good deal but beware. Their software does not work with browsers other than Microsoft's IE which we do not use for security reasons. We have tried to access One.com with Opera and Firefox and neither will function.

We have emailed One.com and will advise of any response. However, we thought potential customers should be aware of the limitations of their site. It is no use having a brilliant website if many users can't use it.

I don't understand what you mean? I can access their site with firefox, opera and maxathon. Can even view it in Windows Explorer!

A web site is just a text file and all browsers will understand and show it.

Does anyone know anything about Mr Site takeaway websites?

I haven't used them myself, but someone I know who has used them said "They are good for complete beginners who don't know what they are doing, but once you learn a little you realise you can't do a lot with them"

Just to mention another hosting company, who I've been using for just over 2 years, and am very happy with - www.afmu.com - they have a 'free' hosting package, which I'm very happy with - the catch (if you can call it that) is that you have to pay for a domain name, I'm paying US$50 for two years, but I think you can vary the length of time - I've just renewed now, for the next 2 years.

You get pretty reasonable storage and bandwidth - not sure off-hand, but I haven't needed more, and the support is first-rate, I've had all my emails responded to within a day, usually within an hour or two.

I haven't tried transferring my domain away, so can't vouch for that, but given all my dealings with them so far, I'd be surprised if they dragged their heels.
  • This is worth noting as well...

It says that you can only cancel by post and you need to do it well before the year is up.

    Also its 10.58 inc vat

    1.6. Cancellation of subscriptions
A subscription can be cancelled at any time by the customer. Since the subscription period lasts for 12 months and is automatically prolonged 45 days before the end of each 12-month period, a cancellation must be must be made in writing on paper, signed by the customer and received by One.com at the latest 45 days before the 12-month subscription period. The unused portion of any advance payment will not be refunded. If the cancellation is not sent to One.com in time by letter or fax, the customer is obliged to pay the subscription fee for the following 12-month period. Subscriptions cannot be cancelled by e-mail.
  • A great offer for a new user looking to host their own website online.

As an advanced user and as a previous poster has stated a few technique restrictions - i think i'll stay with my current provider.
  • i use https://www.x10hosting.com for my website https://www.after5.co.uk
Its free and better than some payed hosts i have used
  • My experience over recent years is to keep your domain registration in a separate company from your hosting company.

This gives you more options on what you want to do with each package.

For domain names, pick a company that offers free/cheap privacy options, this helps to stop SOME spam e-mails, keeps you more anonymous. I use Dynadot and GoDaddy, so far both without problem.

Hosting more problematic, depends on what you want (basic web site or with custom error pages, add-ons, etc.)

If you are signed up with an ISP for your internet connection, you normally get some free webspace, but it's very limited in what it offers.

I've bought hosting packages off eBay previously, they were cheap but less reliable (down time, no support) than the bigger companies.

Whatever company you choose, there are plenty of reviews if you just google for them!

    You pays your money . . .

Just for the record, as per the wiki :

Overselling is a term used in the web hosting industry to describe a situation in which a company provides hosting plans that are unsustainable if every one of its customers uses the full extent of services advertised. The term is usually referred to the web space and bandwidth transfer allowance.
This practice usually incurs little ill-effect since most customers do not use any significant portion of their allocated share. If a customer has a small, low-traffic site serving static HTML pages, few resources will be used. If a customer wishes to run a high-traffic, professional, or business website an oversold hosting account can be detrimental. In these cases, a virtual private server or dedicated server is a preferred option.

Isnt this the same as T-Mobile doing flext and bundling loads of minutes with the packages.

We all flocked to T-mobile with no problem ............

10.58 for a .com domain I can use with the bundled hosting with a get out of jail card if they are rubbish after 10 months if I fax at the correct time ( 45 DAYS, BUT 55 TO BE sure !! ) - Sounds good to me
