£9 for website hosting + domain for a year

What's the deal?

Web host One.com's offering new users a year's hosting for free; though you do need to pay its £9 setup fee. After a year, you'll pay its usual rates unless you cancel with at least 14 days' notice (though you can always transfer the domain if you do)

How can I get one?

Apply at One's site, which also has a useful 'Before You Buy' FAQ section.

Three hosting packages are available, offering 1000, 2000 or 4000 mb of web space. They usually cost 90p/month, £1.90/month or £3.60/month plus VAT respectively, and this is the rate you'll pay if you keep the site longer than a year.

Unless you know you'll need more space, take the smallest, cheapest package; you can easily upgrade at any time only paying the difference.

All the packages include a domain name (many types available, inc .co.uk & .com), unlimited e-mail accounts, virus & spam filtering, a simple web editor, 3 click blog, FTP-login, ASP - PHP5 - MySQL, and daily backups, as well as 24/7 live support.

As part of the offer you also receive a Google Adwords voucher worth up to £75, depending on which package you choose; this will enable you to buy adverts which appear in the right hand side of the Google search engine.

Anything else I should know?

There's a 15-day money-back guarantee, so if you decide you don't want the web space after all, you can get your £9 setup fee back if you act fast.

If you're worried you might forget to cancel in time, use our Tart Alert. Originally designed to help stoozers stay on top of their cards' 0% dates, it'll send you an email when it's time to cancel - just put in the date.

The one year hosting seems a good deal, the domain name costs are uncompetitive to say the least after that year is up. If possible I'd advise looking into transferring the domain you get to another registrar after that year is up.

Domain names are cheap they can be gotten for as little as £4.99 the hosting is the part which will cost the money.

I got my domain name free hosting free and unlimited e-mails free by opening a pay as you go account with madasafish.

I only use the account to up-load my web pages and I go online with it once a month at a cost of 5p just to keep the account active.

I am building it into a community site https://www.ne21.co.uk

Make sure you read the small print, hard drive space costs next to nothing now, it's the bandwidth that costs the money so check what limits there are on bandwidth and if there are any excess charges for exceeding the limits, it's unlikely to be unlimited access.

This is of no use if you already own a domain and wish to keep your current registrar (as do I as I use Google Apps for my email on my domain) - they only allow new registrations or transfers of domains, you cannot use your own registrar's DNS to point to the One.com servers. I have confirmed this by chatting on their Live Support system. But its still a really good offer if you are starting from scratch.

Basic set up with e-mail ( 20 x pop3), domain, 1 gig space & 8 gig bandwith for £1 for the year. Might be good for some people

Hi wakandem, activestart charges £28.08 domain name 2 years plus one years hosting when you try to buy it - not that cheap! As always buyer beware!

I just thought I should add something to this thread seeing as the web hosting industry is my area.....

A few people are saying you can just transfer-out the domain at the end of the 1 year period. What you sometimes find is that certain companies make this very difficult and can charge you extra for transferring out. Basically, it can be a real pain to get a transfer to happen (read the small print!)....so considering the costs (about £4.99/year is a competitive price) you're better off going with a company you can trust and communicate with. With your domain registration in the wrong hands, you're entire web enterprise can be held to ransom. (different tld's have different procedures...for instance there are a few get-out-of-jail cards with .uk domains because you can deal directly with the registry: Nominet.).

You get what you pay for!

    Take care
  • I'd like to recommend http://www.easyhosting.net/ and they're British
I've been using them for years and have several sites for myself and friends hosted there. They have an excellent control panel that allows you to set up unlimited email addresses, autoresponders, set spam whitelists, Frontpage extensions, webstats, SSL, SQL, Perl, Python, protected folders etc etc. I won't detail all of it, otherwise it'll start sounding like I work for them, which I don't!

Their tech support is great, always replying within 24 hours and usually faster, and they do have phone suport now.

It costs £18.47 for two years for the domain name and you get free hosting for the first year. After that the domain name is about £9.97 for two years and the hosting £12 per year for the basic package which has 50MB p/m bandwidth and 10MB disc space. The next package up (500/50MB costs £25 per year).
    Hope this helps

This may look like a good deal but beware. Their software does not work with browsers other than Microsoft's IE which we do not use for security reasons. We have tried to access One.com with Opera and Firefox and neither will function.

We have emailed One.com and will advise of any response. However, we thought potential customers should be aware of the limitations of their site. It is no use having a brilliant website if many users can't use it.
    Bye for now,
    Paul
