From the above, I'd agree the engine needs a top end rebuild, and with the labour (you're not going to be doing it yourself, right) puts it about £1500.
Don't chase individual cars, there's thousands of cars for sale. You will be able to find the right one, the right age/size/mileage/colour, at the right price, in the right condition.

Also good advice on the right car - I now KNOW which make / model / trim / transmission / fuel type and even colour I want - so have set a filter on the major websites (Autotrader etc) that I will be looking at daily0
