It would be a rare beast that does just 20 miles on a regular basis and then 'occasionally' does a six hour 300+ mile monster trip without stopping as in this use case example.

I don't think it is that rare. Plenty of people regularly commute 20 miles or less, then go on holiday with their car a few times a year (doing 300+ mile journeys).

At which point they will be lucky if the ICE engine even runs if they left e10 in the tank ;)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

It's more common if you scale it back to say 100 miles. Lots of hybrid workers will have a 100-150 mile round trip 2-3 times a week, with very little driving the rest of the week. That could be done in full BEV though assuming it's new enough so it probably just comes down to car choice and budget.

For most people though it's going to be better to have one or the other.

I am sure that there are lots of people who do that but the suggestion that they also do 300+ miles without stopping (say 6 hours driving) which is the use case that would be an issue, I would suggest is very rare.

What's stopping got to do with it? Are you assuming, if you stop, you can also (and are quite happy to pay the prices for) charge the car fully? Because you can't...........because its an electric car, and it takes ages to charge them, way longer than you actually need to stop for, especially if you're stopping drivers.

Where does all this stuff come from?

It's simply fiction, the vast majority of people will take a break long before they have completed 300+ miles or 6 hours of driving.

But there are young people with strong bladders who would drive from London to Glasgow & back every weekend non-stop, pulling over just long enough to swap drivers, and also spend the week commuting less than 50 miles a day.

For them, a PHEV would be ideal.

The rest of us could work a 20 minute fast charge into a toilet break/snack break/take Dog for a wee stop.
70p a KWh is extortionate (20p per mile or so), but not much above what diesel costs (plus your first couple of hundred miles were charged from home reducing the total journey cost) , and about the same as my petrol car costs anyway.

Be surprised if your diesel costs that much - closer to 10p a mile on a motorway? Agree with you though. If we're driving for leisure, I'm happy to stop for an hour on a long drive. If I'm driving for work, I might stop for a loo break, grab a coffee, then I'm back on the road.

It comes from experience. I used to deliver cars, long distance, for a living. We got paid per mile, not per hour, and the schedule was pretty tight if you wanted to earn a lot. Also, obviously, cars aren't on the tacho unlike HGVs. So, a 300 mile journey would probably take 5-6 hours, and I'd stop typically twice (once to fuel up near the start, depending on how much fuel was already in the car; and once for the loo). Both of these take about 5 mins. Modern cars are pretty comfortable so 5-6 hour drive with short breaks is relatively easy. I'd get a decent rest on the train to the next job.

If you need an hour to go for a wee, see a doctor!
