Sending mobile to India!

Sorry, I am not sure where to post!

I need to send a mobile to India. What is the safest / cheap way to send it? Few years ago when I sent one, it got lost on the way.

I heard about 'International signed for' from Royal Mail.Is there any better option?

[Or should I just lock the phone and send it ?]

Please advice!:o

    HI,
iF THE PHONE IS COSTLY There are 99% chances, the phone will be lost even if you send it by 'international sign for'.
if u really want to send the phone to india send phone without box and accesories.u can buy thick novel book from local car boot sale for around 50p
cut pages from inside according to ur phone size, put the phone in the gap(it must look as a novel) and send it as a book.:D
    IT REALLY WORKS..!
    MSE IS AN ADDICTION

Don't forget that Indian customs may charge you too and it might be a bit since they would work out the cost of the phone in India and charge you accordingly.

You can send gifts to the value of RS10,000 without incurring any customs charges. Include a receipt in the envelope to show the value is less than RS10K.

Also marke the parcel as a personal gift.

I dont think they are twice the price but relatives and friends find it easier to ask for a freebie than buy one themselves.

Sometimes when phones are on special offer (eg the W810i Virgin were doing for £38 - now expired) then compared to India they can be cheaper.

The following India based retailer will give you an idea of what prices are in India.

The only cheap phones I have see in India are very old Nokia handsets and chinese clones (which are not very durable).

Phones are more expensive in India. I work for an Indian company and every time anybody goes over we have to take phones over for our staff because they're so much cheaper here.

Re the original question - never send anything by post over there! Will nearly always go missing (we lost about 80% of the post when we first started out!!). Much better to use a courier as you're insured against loss and damage in transit, and you will also be able to track it online.

I had a look at few phones........for example SE w810i costs Rs.10,000 [equates £120 ,but I am sure it is much cheaper here]

    Thanks for your reply.
1.The courier service cost much more than the cost of the phone itself.
coming back to 'International signed for' with compensation at loss about £500..............what do they mean?
2.Do we need to provide them evidence of the cost of the contents? or we are eligible for £500 straightaway if it is lost.
3.Is it a good idea to block the phone on posting, then unblock it/
4.Do you know any cheaper courier service?
    Thanks for your help

Which courier service were you looking at? I know a few through work so may be able to help if it's one you hadn't already found. What's the weight and dimmensions of the package?

I think you'd need to provide evidence of the contents and costs etc to make a claim, not 100% though.

I'd say not much point blocking it. As you probably know they can do ANYTHING over there, and if someone did intercept the post and take it they could get it unblocked any use it any way.

It's a shame I didn't see this post earlier. We had a member of our staff from India over for christmas and could probably have arranged for him to take it over and courier it to your friend/relative from there! Would have saved you loads no doubt. He leaves tomorrow evening though so too late now:o
