in Credit cards
Hi, I got credit card with RBS with 10000 pounds limit, and I used in once to make interest free balance transfer from another credit card one year ago.
My interest free period will finish at 10.04.2025.
My statements are generated on 7th day of each month, with a payment by 1st day of a next month.
I want to make one big purchase with my credit credit card (over 4000 pounds), and use interest free period in full, and then pay credit card in full and close it.
Do make sure that's understand everything right, I spoke with an agent after my February statement (7th of February), if I made purchase on what day I need to pay credit card to avoid any interest. He said to me that any transaction made today (10.02) is interest free until next payment on next statement. Next statement is 7th of march and next payment will be in April.
(I attached screenshot of conversation).
So I made a transaction over 4000 pounds on 3.3.2025 with use all credit limit, and I wad waiting for a statement on 7th of march when I want it pay in full.
But on my statement I was charged 9,98 pounds for these 4 days, which also exceed my credit limit, which infected my credit rating.
Am I right, or miss something, cause I can't get it, why they charged me that? If bank doesn't agree with me, is any body which I can dispute that fee? Also can I make it right with credit ranking?

Never mix balance transfers and purchases.
Was it an actual person you chatted with or just the AI bot 'Cora'?0 -

No, that was human agent from Credit Cards department.0

What does it say about interest in the T&Cs? I would always rely on finding an accurate answer there rather than phone or chat (whether with a human or a bot).
Hint: I would be very surprised if the expression "interest-free period" was to be found anywhere there. Usually, they talk of calculating the interest from the date of purchase, and then go on to say that such interest is waived IF THE STATEMENT BALANCE IS PAID IN FULL BY THE DUE DATE. Hence the suggestion: "Never mix balance transfers and purchases", as then you don't clear the ststement balance.0 -
You won't have an interest free period for your purchase unless you pay it off by 10th April, along with the balance transfer.
Barclaycard are the only credit card I can think of were you can mix and match balance transfers and purchases without being charged interest if you pay off only one portion of the balanceI consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?0 -
If anyone wants to know, how my case finished: few times I tried talk with someone through a chat, but staff there isn't "best", so I wrote down official complaint (through app).
Took them only one day to give me answer, and basically:
- guys above was right, and nit supposed to mixed my balance promotion period with new purchase, my bag.
- but, because I was misled by agent through a chat, RBS decided:
So, lesson learnt, luckily without any consequences, I'm really surprised with a reply from RBS.3 -
