The average Severn Trent water bill is going up by 22% from 1st April, according to MSE.

However, I just had my bill come through (for a non-metered, residential supply) and it's gone up by 30%.

Do Ofwat set different increases for metered and non-metered properties?

Yes, unmetered supplies usually get a bigger increase.

Postie delivered next doors ST bill to me by mistake. Realised too late that it wasn't mine.

There's is £1100 (based on rates) for the year - 3 people  ; ours for 2 people (with a meter) is £500.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

I'm with Anglian Water and ours has gone up by 19.5%.

Without a meter we'd be paying over £900 for the fixed charge plus whatever the RV charge is.

With a meter it's now around £450 (two at home all day and including an auto garden watering system - April to September and washing two cars and a caravan several times a year)
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • Severn Trent Water - love the way they use "average" increases  - They announced 22% average increase - ours has gone up 31% - unmetered Band B property. It was the same last year, our increase was substantially more the average, in fact over 2 years it has gone up 53%. Just got off the phone and they gave me no sensible answers, other than to say Ofwat had given them permission to increase "average " bills by 47% over 5 years and they were front loading the increase. They did not have an answer when I said my bill had increased by 53% over 2 years!  Enquired about a water water (2 people living in a 3 bed property, low to average use) and was told it would cost £40 more new unmetered bill! Go figure.

That's hard to believe. Almost everyone saves money with a water meter. Four of us in a 3-bed semi do.

Percentage I don't know.  Hate Maths !!  But last years was £460.  Today the new bill arrived - £556.95.  Non metered, residential property.  Its an old house.  The cost of the heating is bad enough through winter so its relaxing to not having to think about the water.  But still, its a shocking increase.  There are 3 adults in the property.  I used to work at the Severn Trent Water call centre and the biggest moans from customers were the metered bills being unexpectantly high !

Switched to a metered supply 2weeks ago with ST. Currently my metered supply costs £3.05 per cubic meter with fixed daily charges of 29.14p. This goes up to £4.05 per cubic meter and 41.21p daily charge. That’s more like 33% than the advertised 22% noted by boxerfrogs99 above.  I still expect the meter will work out cheaper than the unmetered supply as we have a high rateable value 3 bed house with 3 adults who are good at energy saving.

Wow, these increases are ridiculous, especially when you hear of all the wrong-doing these water companies get away with in terms of polluting the environment with untreated waste water.

I must say I'm seriously considering a water meter, but just the thought of another way I am measured and monitored puts me off. So going to try the Severn Trent Big Difference Scheme first.

I've just had this years water bill from Severn Trent...mine has gone up by £130 from last year. For me that's a colossal 23% increase! Something is going to give soon, this kind of inflation just can't go on. It would not surprise me to see the people rebelling at some point.

Just taking the Mickey with water bills. £544 last year, £674 this year. In 2021, just 4 years ago it was £386, so around a 75% increase in 4 years!. There is only me, my dog and a cat. This is just madness.

We have had decades of underinvestment in the water industry, yes some of that has occurred because of profits, but equally a significant proportion has happened because the regulator has held bills down for too long and not mandated investment. We have two choices, allow the water supply system to fail, or pay more, personally I choose the latter.

Or, if you drop the paranoia and get a meter your bill will likely drop to around £240-250 a year. It does seem odd to complain about the cost when you are deliberately choosing to have significantly higher bills.
