Hertz Car Rental - Insurance query

Options
Hi - I've booked a car in Canada for this summer but the booking really doesn't make it clear if Insurance is covered or not.
I was all prepared to take out a standalone policy for the excess but now i dont even know ive got the basics!  How can i tell?

Its a prepaid reservation and the confirmation doesnt mention it at all?

It should have said when you were booking.
    Such as CDW.LDW.

It should say on your booking what is included and it always states it clearly when you are booking.

    What site did you use?
    What does your email say?

I agree it should have said but it really didnt!   I read Martins guide first and that explains the insurance details should be clearly laid out when booking in *Europe* and this is Canada, so i guess the rules are different. I booked directly with Hertz as I've been caught out previously with comparison sites. The site offered me LDW and i declined that - assuming that was the excess waiver part which i would take out a separate policy for - did i misunderstand?

If you're at all worried, go on Money Maxim and get insurance which covers excess, CDW, and SLI. It will still be cheaper than whatever Hertz offer to you.

In North America its possible to hire cars with no insurance at all, its fairly common their to have a personal liability policy that covers your in any vehicle and/or enhanced credit cards often include a hire care insurance as a perk.

In British Columbia all vehicles must be insured by the state for third party losses CAD$200,000. I'd personally check with Hertz but my guess would be having waived the CDW you have no insurance for damages to the vehicle itself and the $200k on TP losses.

Just be careful with that though, the SLI is a surplus layer policy not a primary layer, ie it has to sit above another policy. Doing a quote their recommended policy is a USD$1m SLI however if there is no primary layer from the rental company then in the US it's a $0 cover.

Your blunder there was in going to the https://www.hertz.com and not the https://www.hertz.co.uk website and then further removing the LDW. So now you are liable for the total cost of the car, rather than just the excess.
Probably best to cancel and start again if you haven't paid anything or the amount is fully refunded.
If you don't, you'll need a policy described thus: Worldwide Incl. CDW & SLI
Get quotes for both Daily and Annual, as annual can often work out to be less expensive, dependent on the length of the trip.
