    Think how this looks to the agent selling the house you wanted.  You said you wanted to buy the house, and asked them to come and value yours.  That makes it looks like you've only just started thinking about selling your house, so however much you offer, the seller is likely to want to go with someone who can move quicker.  Equally, the agent thinks you only want your house valued because you're thinking of buying this house, they know the seller isn't going to accept your offer so they don't prioritise coming to value your house.  Just because the agent apparently ignored you, doesn't mean you are going to be ignored by the next agent you ask to come and value your house, where it isn't all tangled up with you offering on on the other house.

    If you get your house on the market and then someone makes an offer and a suitable onwards purchase hasn't come up, no-one is going to straightaway force you to buy a different house you don't want.

    Many of these sales fall through though?

    Offers must be made through a solicitor in Scotland.

    An informal offer is not binding. 

    Or you lodge a note of  interest through your solicitor  and will be notified  of any developments. 

    If the seller wants the highest offer and there are several interested parties they may go to a closing date. 

    When I bought my last house there were 40 people interested but when it went to a closing date there were two offers

    Sales are normally concluded much quicker in Scotland than the rest of the  UK. 

    Missives can be ready for signing in 4 weeks.

    OP, unless it works very differently in Scotland, you are having a laugh if you think anyone will take your offer seriously until you are sold subject to contract. That's how a chain builds, and it builds from the bottom up. If I was the vendor, I'd just ignore your offer.

    Chains are not normal in Scotland  because of the shorter conveyancing times.

      It is also common to offer on a house before selling your  own.  Entry dates are usually discussed at viewing to establish  expectations. Offers will say ‘a mutually agreed date’ which will be confirmed when missives are ready for signing , which could be in 4 weeks in some cases. 

    When I bought my current house my seller had had an offer accepted on his onward purchase with entry in 4 weeks.  He was looking for a buyer who could meet that timeline.
