house deeds storage

Land Registry lost our deeds and we had to take a 9 month bridging loan, not funny in the mid 80s at 15% but we wanted the house and were quite far into the sale. If we pulled out it would have been back on the market out of our range.
Our solicitor advised against suing but we did anyway on our own and won (v strong case!) Bought all my kitchen/white goods and still have the freezer, washing machine, oven, hob in true moneysaving style 23 years later!Love living in a village in the country side0 -
Maybe keep the original deeds in a safe and let the solicitors or the bank have the copies! I dont trust any of them either. Ive been pondering this problem last couple of years-even though we have years of mortgage left-may stick with the small mortgage option for a while when the time comes-but then again-would need to think on that some more-think the £30 is wellspent on a box!Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0

I'm only 30 and have 24 years left on my mortgage, but when I re-mortgaged a few years ago (I'm a rate tart) I was sent my deeds by mistake and have just held onto them. I think that they are not so important now, as someone else has said. I took some advice when I remortgaged last year and the Nationwide said just to hold onto them. THey weren't bothered about having them, so they're in my filing cabinet. It's not like burglars are interested in your paperwork! DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

The other thing to remember is that all deeds are now computerised at Land Registry. I was told the other day that the paper copies are no longer as "valuable" as they used to be due to this. Gine are the days when you could lose your house if you lost the deeds. In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

Following the redemption of my mortgage I was sent the title deeds of my property. Enclosed was a form DS2E which I needed to complete and send off to the land Registry to remove the entry relating to the mortgage from the title registers. I also phoned the Land Registry to ask if I needed to lodge the title deeds with a bank or solicitor. I was told that the paperwork that I had been sent by the mortgage company had no legal value, just sentimental. All the neccessary legal documents were kept electronically. The letter I received from the mortgage company refered to these papers as "of great importance" and that they should be kept in a bank or other place of safety. My advice is to call the Land Registry Office on 020 7917 8888. They will tell you anything you need to know. They are very obliging.0

We paid off our mortgage in the '90s but the Bank sent our historic deeds back to us before that saying that they no longer had any legal function but we may want to keep them for interest's sake (we did - they are from 1857).
When I rang the Land Registry the said there was absolutely no need to keep them, it was now kept electronically and I could throw them away if I wanted.
So although you may wish to keep your historic deeds, if your house is registered at the Land Registry there is no need to and certainly no need to pay for the privilege.
Make sure your hiouse IS registered though, before disposing of them!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0
