In my recent experience DWP are quite quick if there has been an overpayment or a spouses pension needs adjusting, although if means tested benefits such as Pension Credit are involved they may also come back after probate is issued (if required) to query if the declared amount seems high (often because it incudes the value of the deceased's main residence).
HMRC can take ages though - I received a tax refund last month for my late father who died back in March last year.1 -

Have you got the council tax in your name yet?0

Isn't council tax paused for a while after a death?0

In this particualr case, if my recollection of previous posts is correct, the OP was living in the house with the deceased (mother) as her carer and is the sole beneficiary , so now needs to be moving all all utility bills, council tax etc into their own name. They should now be able to claim the single person discount though.1 -
Now that mum doesn't have a bank account as I closed it and moved funds to a savings account with my online banking, does anyone know if any refunds are due from tax etc how they would be paid in to that account considering she's not the account holder. For instance if they send a cheque in her name it's not going to be able to be deposited is it?0

If her estate is due a refund of income tax it will be paid to you as her executor not to her bank account.1

As executor you'll be responsible for ensuring that the tax affairs of the deceased are finalised with the HMRC. Likewise that the Estate files a tax return if so required.
Bank statements are the normally the best way of dealing with notifications to start with.1
