I've tried a new thing this month. I put £300 in a separate pot and gave myself £10 a day for 'wants'. It sounds like a lot, but this is to include takeaways, treats, clothes, make up, acupuncture, garden related stuff I don't 'need', dog walker etc. I think it's working pretty well, I don't feel like I can't have something, I just can't have the takeaway and the pretty plants today. I can have one now and one in a few days though. By which time I have usually found something else I want. I think it tricks me into feeling like I have plenty of money to treat myself and I don't feel miserable and hard done by, but it slows me down and makes me think. Oh, you want that £25 pair of jeans even though you have wearable jeans? Well then you can certainly have them in 3 days time.
I'll do it again next month, and see if it's something I want to stick at for a while. Next month it has to include a haircut that I've booked - 6 days worth of treat money!
It's helped me to not waste money that I think doesn't really count because it's payday but the new month hasn't started and I haven't done budgets yet. Or hit the f*** it button because it all feels hard.

That's a great idea, glad it worked well"Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee1
