Service received from garage

Hi,

Bit of a long winded one so appreciate anyone who takes the time to read this and comment.

I recently booked my vehicle into a specialist (over an hour away from me) for the timing chain to be replaced. I emailed them a few days before the car was due to go in asking if they could first inspect the engine (by means of checking the spark plugs and using a borescope) to ensure there wasnt anything nasty looking. I had been suffering from the vehicle consuming a larger than normal quantities of oil and found a leak in the lower cam cover (hence the reason for getting the chains replaced also) so basically I wanted to make sure I wasnt throwing my money away by getting the chain work done if a bigger underlying issue was present.

They confirmed everything looked ok and so continued with the work. I have since found they have not replaced a part they said they did, so am in discussions with them regarding that.

I had the car back and it was booked into a local specialist (they couldnt facilitate the cam chain at the date/time I needed) a few days later as I wanted a few other bits checked out as I as getting close to the end of the first 6 months of the finance agreement. They also pulled the plugs and told me that there is an issue.

Unfortunatley they couldnt tell me the cause of the issue as it would require delving into further (and possible disassembly of the engine) however I feel as though the first garage havent really fulfilled what was requested of them and may have purposely told me everything looked ok so I would have the additional work carried out by them.

I do not beleive the first garage is part of the Motor Ombudsman and when I spoke to them with regards to the part I beleive was not replaced I was spoken to in quite an agressive way.

I am just after some advice on where I stand and what I can do really, the work was paid for on my credit card so I am wondering if this would be a suitable case for chargeback?

You could have a chargeback right if you paid for the none replacement  part they did not do it. (part cost & labour for doing that work) So long as you have a invoice with a breakdown of the costs for such.
You would not have a right to all the amount, as you can not prove that the other work was not done & a internal look at parts could be very subjective.

Yeh thats the trouble, on the invoice the part isnt listed. Its just in the workshop manual for the vehicle it states that it must be replaced once removed. So technically I havent paid for the part if that makes sense.
  • Hello OP

In general services must be carried out with due care and skill, if you could show that wasn't the case then you'd have a claim for any damages that naturally arise from their actions (or lack of).

I don't know anything about cars so can't comment specifically on your situation :)

They are a VW approved garage and within the workshop manual for the service they carried out it states a particular bolt (which is quite important) needs to be replaced due to it stretching. They havent replaced this, they told me they have however I have proof which shows they havent. The bolt is not on the invoice they gave me which is why I questioned it with them originally.
