When I’ve needed to pay in a cheque where there was no other means of doing so and many other customers were queuing to withdraw cash which they could have done at the ATM. Just one example. I now pay in the odd cheque using the bank’s app, but some intransigent customers refuse to do that and want to visit a branch.
If they bank with Nationwide then not using the app to pay in cheques won't be a matter of choice.

As a member of this forum I would imagine I’d do what others on here do and have another current account which does allow cheque deposit via the app, then transfer the funds to the intended account. Those less savvy could pay cheques in at the Post Office - the majority of banks offer this facility.

EDIT: Nationwide doesn’t allow the paying-in of cheques at the Post Office! I’m very surprised.

It's obviously the only reason NW bought Virgin Money, they'll have that VM cheque paying-in tech incorporated into their own app inside six years I'll wager.

One of my favourite banks was Girobank. It was different enough to make it really interesting. I was disappointed when it was taken over by the Alliance and Leicester back in 1990.

It is a matter of choice. They have chosen to bank with a company that is extremely old fashioned and have chosen not to have a second account with somewhere that allows app cheque deposits.

I don't bank with Nationwide, but recently couldn't use the app to pay in a cheque. Even the paying in machine in branch wouldn't 'verify' said cheque, so I had to join a queue (of one, plus one already at the counter) to pay it in. It was rather an odd looking cheque (result of a shares sale, drawn on Citibank I think) and even the cashier did a double take.

They still call their cheques warrants:

The easiest way to get your prize(s) is by having it paid straight to your bank account. In fact, 9 in 10 prizes are already paid this way or are reinvested into more Bonds.

It’s quick and easy, with the alternative option being a paper warrant (like a cheque). If you choose this way to receive a prize you’ll need to wait for it to be printed, packed and posted – and then have the hassle of going to the bank to pay it in.

They tried to do away with them a few years ago, pushing people to direct bank payment, and had to reverse that policy after the resultant uproar, so sometimes progress is halted!
