I'm only speaking from personal experience, Pieface!!! I remember ringing up a catalogue and complaining because 'their' website had an error and wouldn't let me place my order online. Then later I logged in on a pc and it worked fine - the problem was with my system, not theirs!

Later, I encountered problems running online surveys on Safari, that just locked up and wouldn't let me continue. The survey company said it might be the browser (I'm not technical - at that point I didn't even know what a browser was!) - but they suggested 3 different ones to try - I tried Firefox and it was fine. I know some people are happy with Safari, but it's just been very problematic for me. I can't even list on ebay in Safari - have to go over to Firefox to be able to access all the functions.

I just wanted to offer my slice on this. The people who develop websites should make sure their code works with all browsers and not just the most popular (usually Internet Explorer but increasingly Firefox). Don't let a company fool you into thinking you have a problem with your browser, it's most likely lazy web developing on the part of the website owner rather than an internal problem with the browser.

Saying that, I've recently switched from Safari to Firefox because it's more expandable to my needs than Safari (e.g. I can block Ads and have Twitter updates pop up from the bottom of the browser).

Then again it could be the browser at fault. If a "Place bet" button appears, and works for all browsers except one then who is at fault?

I don't see why everyone who has a web site and uses a PC to develop that site should also have to buy a MAC just because Safari does things differently to most other browsers.

Safari is available for both Windows and Mac so I don't see any excuse for having a website that does not work in one browser.

I just feel that is part of responsible and ethical use of the internet. Safari is a standards compliant browser and it is programmed to display websites that comply with basic web standards. If a website isn't coded to comply with the standards then it is understandable that it will not be displayed correctly.

I'm not getting into an argument about w3c standards, been through that s*t far too many times.

But..... Nobody has said the site in question did not comply with standards, they said the site was fine in every browser they used EXCEPT Safari.

The problem is not that the site does not display correctly, but that it does not display correctly in Safari.
  • Yeah, you don't need to using OS X to program for it - although i don't think it's unfair to expect developers to own various platforms to test on - it is their business! Most websites work across all browsers but you get the occasional glitch on some - this was just to warn people about extrabet through quidco, not to start a fight

...but seeing as we are giving opinions, I think that the job of a developer (my lovely husband is a computer programmer so i'm not being ignorant) is to programme in an accessible way, rather than a choosy way. Business is business after all, and I'm sure nobody at extrabet said, "Mac users' money isn't good enough for us". I think it is the fault of the web developers in this case, as it is no more difficult to program agnostically than it is for just one browser. Safari is not at fault here, because if it was, I would not be able to use it on every other website.
