Thank you again for posting the link to Linda Ivell’s book @alicef - I love it.alicef said:@Laura_Elsewhere my OH swore by Loakes, (several pairs going strong still), because they could be mended again and again. They don't get much use these days as he seems to favour trainers!
@PipneyJane I did a link to Linda Ivell's book - I think it is very interesting, (haven't read too much as I have a pile of projects on the go).
Speaking of projects, Black Sheep Wools, (which I must visit one day), in conjunction with Martin Storey have a blanket KAL starting in October. It looks VERY impressive. I haven't done a Black Sheep Wool KAL BUT I suspect it is similar to the Rowan one in that the pattern is free so one can knit from stash rather than buy the recommended wool

I’m with you about visiting Black Sheep Wools shop at some point. They always have a stand at the Knit&Stitch Show at Ally Pally and I usually spend several coupons at it. The only thing I would say is if you find something at their shop that you love, buy more than you need because it may be a “mill end” and no additional skeins will ever be available. They have a relationship with several of the big woollen mills (e.g. Sirdar), where they buy the mill’s unsold/end-of-the-line stock at a considerable discount.
What is everyone knitting/crocheting at the moment? Amazingly, I only have socks on the needles. We’ve got an American friend staying with us at the moment, so I’m making him a pair of socks. Just started the gusset on the second sock.

I was wearing fairly sturdy repro 1930s shoes to Goodwood last Saturday and they survived the rain and mud amazingly well - I had applied mink oil to the leather soles and my feet stayed dry.
Mink oil? Please explain, @thriftmonster . I’ve never heard of it.

I have mostly been crocheting poppies for my local stately home (where I’m a volunteer). Rather grumpy to learn recently that they’ve got ‘enough’ red poppies - well they should have said so a bit sooner, as I have a couple of dozen ready to hand in.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. It's a form of leather treatment that I came across when I was looking at how to protect leather soles. You apply it like shoe polish, let it soak in and buff it up with a brush. It nourishes the leather and waterproofs it but you have to be careful not to use too much too often as it can oversoften the leather. I guess it works a bit like dubbin -but is used in leather restoration.PipneyJane said:thriftmonster said:Also late to the party but @Laura_Elsewhere that pinafore is lovely.

I fell down some serious shoe care rabbit holes but can report great success in inches of mud at Goodwood.“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

Ask on your local Facebook pages if there are any displays that need topping up. Ours usually needs a few replacing. It would have been nice to have been told though.PollyWollyDoodle said:I have mostly been crocheting poppies for my local stately home (where I’m a volunteer). might be worth contacting the local British Legion and asking them if they could use the poppies, @PollyWollyDoodle.

We went to the V&A on Thursday. Had a relatively quick wander around and then popped into the shop, where I was taken by this rather lovely beret:

Pure wool. Made in Scotland. £45. Thank you, V&A for valuing the work that went into this. There were matching gloves, too, but I didn’t record their price.
No, I didn’t buy it. It wasn’t quite my colours - the red was too orange. If they’d had a blue version, I’d have been very tempted.

The beret has inspired me, though, @CapricornLass. You know that skein of WYS Signature Sock that I purchased in Wood Pigeon? It’s told me that it wants to be a beret with cream trim. It’ll go perfectly with the two pairs of socks and the pair of fingerless mitts that I’ve already made.
