You might be able to counteract the bounce of hair by dampening it. Metallic embroidery thread i(rather than Metallica thread as autocorrect wants to write) is bouncy and dampening works with that. I suppose it may also depend on how porous and wavy your hair is too.

That's a really good idea thanks @florianatwobob. I'll find some more mending and give it a try!

Human hair is notoriously difficult to knot! With practice you could possibly fuse the knot by holding a blown-out match near it for heat, but tbh, just try anything and everything!! 

No pics yet- will get some tomorrow- but I am wearing on Sunday the frock I cut out on Tuesday it’s the 1929 petticoat pattern I used last year with heavy red linen, but this time with olive-green-and-cream cotton needlecord from @thriftwizard a few years back! I am very pleased and it looks nicely autumnal.
also, a man in Tesco came up and told me how much he liked my outfit and how nice it looked

I just did a bit of catching up on my coupons for the year to date.  I'd let slip the regular accounting and I had in the back of my mind that I'd completely blown my allocation.  Which I would have if I hadn't ended up taking it all back because it either didn't fit or the quality was awful.  Not something I could have done back then of course!  As it is I still have 32 coupons left

I will need a couple more thermal vests.  Long range forecasts are tentative;y suggesting it could be a cold one.  And there's a site I look at occasionally Indigenous UK Weather, which took over from Weather without Tecnology.  It supposedly uses nature's signals to forecast and that says it's going to be a doozy

I am interested in the old wives' tales and traditional ideas of weather forecasting, but it does make me giggle, as of course autumn's bounty IS directly linked to weather- but to the weather there was in spring and summer beforehand!   

But some of the old traditions are fun  

I saw that it's been an amazing year for apples and all the cider makers are happy! We certainly have tons of apples on our feral and wild apple trees round here...

I’ve just spent a fascinating afternoon at the Battle of Britain Bunker in Uxbridge.  Tomorrow, 15th September, is Battle of Britain Day.  It was  85 years ago.  Did you know that the first booklet published about it was published less than a year later, by the Ministry of Information, and sold over 300,000 copies?

I found the WAAF call-up papers fascinating.  Apologies for the size, but I thought it’d be best to read.

I found exactly the same. Very strange!

Fascinating booklet thanks. You can only wonder what people had got up to trying to enrol previously, in order that no.4 was included.

No.5 is also interesting: it suggests a drain on reserved occupations which I suppose makes sense given that people may have wanted a change for whatever reason, but those roles still had to be filled.

I seem to remember Ruth Goodwin saying that people used their hair to darn their stockings during the war.  Probably  it was because it was much finer than the darning wool available.
