Carolyn has started posting 1940s recipes again, https://the1940sexperiment.com/2025/08/31/marrow-charlotte-recipe-no-226/
She is going to publish two recipe books.
I found a hand painted, pure linen table cloth on the second hand store online. So many are Rayon. It was £8.37 with postage and will make a lovely bath towel.7 -
Thanks @PipneyJane
I do craft - I'm knitting a fairisle cowl and a pair of fairisle mittens to go with the tam I made. OH says I look like Super Gran...I don't care so long as I have a warm head. I do fairisle two handed - I don't like the faff of keep swapping yarn - in the round, and I can't be doing with working out how to purl in fairisle! I do a bit of quilting too, when I have the space.
Fab quilt @thriftwizard and lovely hat @Laura_Elsewhere and glad your mum is on the mend.
I've had to buy a pair of pyjamas this week - op coming up and I need something that button's through as I won't be able to lift my arm above my head - so that's 8 coupons already. I also need to buy some darning wool - it comes in 10m lengths on cards - I have no idea how many of those would make up 2oz!8 -
@aethelflaed darning wool is coupon free. (It’s in the fine print of the picture in the first post.)
Can’t chat right now. I’m on my phone.

I went a-picking today with a friend- she and I were caught in every downpour but the rain is still mild so we just found it very funny

damsons, eating apples, crab apples, lots of hedgerow-jelly fruit, and my first-ever bag of hops to dry and try making a sleep pillow with lavender!I am thankful we have as much sugar as I need- trying make lovely preserves on limited sugar must have been a nightmare! I know the WI were allotted more for jam-making but ordinary people must have been frustrated watching fruit rot… it’s not like you can just eat the crab-apples instead of making jelly! Although I might do some as spiced crab apples, to eat with cold meat in midwinter, with a spiced sweet vinegar to put them in…How is everyone doing?

What a wonderful haul @Laura_Elsewhere! We are away for a few days and found a place where damsons and hazelnuts are dropping onto the path, so we've had some of those. At home, the tree where I used to pick up vast quantities of small cooking apples seems to have been cut down and my sister is moving back to her house so I don't get the bounty from their trees, but DH is starting to find roadside apples again and I've seen the sloes are coming along in the hedgerows.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)

Lovely haul, @Laura_Elsewhere. Good luck with your jam making, etc. You were lucky not to get soaked. We had horizontal rain here on Wednesday; it was that gusty, it was coming in sideways.
I have had feedback re my crab apple jelly; DH gave a jar to one of his colleagues who had it on his breakfast toast and announced it was “perfect’. I’ll make Jam Crumblie with some over the weekend and see how that goes.
I have a question for the hive mind: which literary character would complain about how difficult it is to turn a heel? I can’t remember, although I’m wondering if it was one of the witches in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. I’ve been trying to remember since yesterday.

Pip- oh, we got soaked! The reason we found it so funny was that every time we left the house or car it started to rain within minutes, and every time we returned to her house or car it promptly stopped raining and brightened up and the sun even came out several times... but I was soaked to the skin, even my undies were sodden!I've never tried a hop pillow for sleep, so once they are dried, I shall be interested to see how it works...I am hoping to deal with all the bounty today and tomorrow, because on Sunday I really really want a bloomin' Day Off!! It's been a very long time...2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

Oohhh!!!! I’m so sorry. I misunderstood. I hope you dried off and warmed up.Laura_Elsewhere said:Pip- oh, we got soaked! It's been a very long time...Know the feeling @Laura_Elsewhere. It’s highly ironic that I feel like I’m completely underutilised at work but don’t get a sit-down-and-relax at home. It’s one reason why I shoved the crab apple pulp into a (recycled) bread bag in the freezer, waiting until I have some time and the energy to make Crab Apple Chilli Cheese. (DH came home from visiting his mum last Friday, with a bag of pears from his sister’s garden. What the hell am I meant to do with them??? I am not making more jelly! It takes years for us to consume the jam/jelly that I make. Jam Crumblie is about the only time that we eat them.)
Having finally sat down today, I’ve started watching this week’s episode of Sewing Bee. (DH is on his way home from work. This is my only “my time”.). What did you all think of the Edith Head jacket? I’m only about 5 minutes into the program and my first thought is “that uses a lot of fabric! It won’t be very coupon friendly”.
