Windows 11 Pro update problem

As per Newcad's post, you really don't want to be using an OS that's not had updates for more than a few years. As time goes on more and more exploits that aren't going to be patched will be in the toolbox of bad actors.
But I'd still say using Windows 10 until later this decade should be ok - especially as browsers will still be receiving updates and most people will be behind NAT routers, the Windows firewall and (more than likely) an effective windows defender.1 -
Two issues to unpack -
1) Windows 10 support ends October 2025, however Microsoft have announced Extended Support would be available as a paid for annual subscription for both business and home users which would keep Windows Defender updated. Price for home users seems to be unconfirmed, but likely £25 in first year.
2) Windows 11 installed on unsupported hardware which is requiring more unofficial 'work arounds' to update; Microsoft haven't said they'll block such installs outright, only that they may not be supported. The rumoured Windows 12 in late 2025 may not be installable, even using tools such as Rufus, on PCs without TPM, Secure Boot etc.1 -
Stay on your W10 until YOU (not MS) are ready for a new PC, don't pay for support, change your antivirus if necessary, avoid dodgy websites.1
