Another option might be a Barclays Bank Account in one of your names with the other added on as an authorised user.

FYI - merely 'running out of money' will not make your credit report look crap. Credit reports record all positive balances as zero - so an empty bank account looks the same as one with a million quid in it from that perspective.

You are wise to want to avoid a financial connection tho.

Assuming that his credit rating isn't so bad that no organisation will give him a basic bank account... Get him to open a new account which you can put some money into each month for him to spend. Keep your own money separate and do your own spending from your own accounts.

I'm not sure if there would actually be any benefit to having the account in both names.
Only advantage is that if one of the parties dies or becomes unable to manage their affairs, the other party has the account.  I'm not suggesting this as a reason for the OP to have a joint account with someone who has a bad credit history.

If it were me I would open something like a starling bank account and set the overdraft slider to zero so it can't go overdrawn and give him the debit card. I would put money in it as was needed.

Yes there are those who will say that giving someone your debit card is against the rules which is probably is but they're not going to shoot you for buying a can of paint
Unfortunately giving someone what is effectively your debit card and your pin calls every transaction on the account into question.  Yes the bank won't particularly care about a bit of paint but they will care if the account is hacked by someone else as there's no come back to that.

On the other hand if one of you get an account and get the other person third party authority on it that is completely legit and doesn't actually connect you financially.  So it would be perhaps your account and he can get money out at the ATM or buy paint with the debit card completely legitimately.

What about a credit card in your name with an addition card for your father.  The account (and liability) would be yours, but his credit standing would have no direct impact.  He can always pay off any purchases to the card account himself.
