Some towel rails have an auxiliary electric heating element, for when the central heating is off.

True but there would need to be a cable and switch

We had something similar awhile back - did the test that OP has done switching everything off. We went in loft and found a monsoon bathroom extractor fan that was on a rather high setting 24/7. Also we had failed to account for 8x mains operated smoke alarms. - all inherited from previous home owners so we didn’t know a thing about it.

    It's happened again!

Phantom load of 300w per hour since about midday yesterday.

Just back from work and if I switch downstairs sockets off at the fuse it stops.

Bit weird that the fuse for the kitchen sockets doesn't seem to turn anything off.

So all power sockets are now off on the ground floor and the smoke alarm is beeping.

I'll try unplugging everything then before switching the fuse back on.....

My guess would be the fridge. I had an oddly high 154W load when I was just glancing at the octopus app the other night, only telly, fridge and router on and so should have been less than 50W. It was the fridge running excessively. I turned it off and on again and it stopped. (The fridge is 14 years old and getting ready for replacing I think)

No not the fridge, I unplugged everything then switched the fuse back on but it still went bank straight to 300W. Given up now!

Might also be worthwhile to have a look at the socket wiring to see if any odd wires into the back of them that might relate to a unknown device.

The only thing that seems to be connected to the same fuse is the heat alarm in the kitchen.

Do you have a basement or is it a basement flat, it could be a sump pump?
