£6400 mobile bill for 6 day honeymoon

Went to Morocco on honeymoon. Incurred £6400 bill for data roaming. Only received one text from EE when I landed - no other communication or warning that I was incurring fees. No option to buy data roaming package. EE insisting the charges are correct - please someone help!!!

What do you need help on?

They sent you a text on the cost of using data, you confirmed you received it. You used the data despite being told the cost.

Most operators allow you to set a cap on how much additional spend you allow. After an international call incident with the Mrs phone that cost £300 we have always had it set to a very low number, or in my case 0. Obviously that avoids a big bill like yours but also would have meant you'd have had no data in Morocco. Suggest you set a cap now to avoid a repeat in the future.
  • Yikes! That's a bit lumpy!

Morocco seems to be one of the most expensive places for data roaming charges - about £5 per GB I've seen.

You might recall the Scottish MP who ultimately lost his job over an £11K data charge racked up on an Ipad in Moroccco

Not sure how you can play it really? I guess that EE will get charged by the network provider in Morocco and therefore you're liable?

EE send only the one text outlining all roaming costs, on arrival. Do you disagree with EE about your charges, if so why..?

why the hell would you need your phone and use that much data on your honeymoon?

As DGG says, not much you can do apart from appeal to the good nature of someone in EE, and there any extenuating circumstances - illness at home etc?
  • How much do you expect EE to reasonably do?

It took me 30 seconds to find roaming costs for Morocco and I'm not even an EE customer.

Get unlimited minutes, texts and 500MB of data for 24-hours while you’re away. You can only buy roaming passes when you get to the country. We will send you a text when you land.

This service appears to be £7.50 per day, if only you'd taken a minute to check before leaving...

It might not be as much data as you think. The Scottish MP incurred an £11k bill in Morocco for a mere 6GB of data on his ipad

sorry - that's what I meant! £5 per MB! Got my megas and gigas mixed up!

It's eye wateringly expensive, but I presume it is outside the control of networks in the UK/EU

Not the EU as Orange is one of the 3 operators there, but no UK operators with a presence given Orange UK was sold off.

Oddly enough, 1p Mobile (EE virtual network operator) charge 20p/MB

    Yet GiffGaff (O2) charge £5/MB

Must remember to pick some place other than Morocco for a holiday!
